Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Gigabit) MB053LL/A
Reviews:

starsSerious shortcomings flaw this potentially wonderful router
I purchased this router to add two capabilities to our home network: shared printing from PCs and Macs, and a shared USB hard drive. In switching from a Netgear router, I lost a lot of internet filtering features offered by Netgear, which are strangely absent on Apple's product. I guess they figure I'll add my own proxy server into the mix to handle that. What a pain! Using the USB port for a shared drive has been extremely unreliable, and it cannot be written to reliably from either of our Macbooks running Leopard or from our XP or Vista machines, either wirelessly or via a network cable. Yes, the printing works great. And the wireless coverage is very good--probably better than the Netgear router. I've also encountered problems when making configuration changes to the router, such as invoking hardware access control (MAC address). The router simply freezes up. I recommend against purchasing this product unless you'll be happy with basic router functionality and no shared hard drive.

starsExcellent
I have two of these and the only thing I would change is its size. Overall, a very reliable product

starsDidn't work, went back to old router
I bought this device to replace my DLink 4300 Router. What a mistake. After several days of frustration I ended up going back to my DLink. As with many users, I kept losing my connection at random times.

Initial setup wasn't nearly as "easy" as the apple site claimed - they state that you just plug in your devices, turn on the power and voila - you're up and running. Not so. None of my devices detected my network without some serious tinkering.

And if you plan to connect peripherals to the USB port - forget about using them over your network - my WD hard drive didn't show up and my HP All-in-one printer would print but not scan or fax.

This is the worst apple device I've owned to date (and over priced too).

starsSimply AWESOME!
WOW! What a piece of technology and design!
I have ZERO problems with it and the range is superb, on 25% power it overkills my appartment! The quality of connection is first rate, the software is so smartly designed. I own one PowerMac and 3 Apple laptops and everything flyes!

I share drive and 2 printers, everything works smooth.
After suffering all kind of crappy Linksys and Netgear(total junk!!! I hate them with passion) where half of the options are fake, this device is of another legue.
Very happy with it!

starsSuper Wireless Router!
I bought this knife for the use with my MacBook pro. It was easy to install, and worked without tear! I am impressed with the way in which quickly this knife charges of the data -- it seems even faster than my computer which is cabled with the modem [ however which is also due to the pro speed of treatment of MacBook ]. Stripped I tried to bind my printer to this, thus cannot present its observations on the facility or the difficulty of that [ that others commented on negatively approximately ]. In a general way, I am very happy with this knife and would recommend it to my friends.

starsmost problematic router i've ever used
The principal problem is that this unit breaks and restarts at the odd times. Try to transfer much from files starting from a machine to the other and POLE it goes down. If they were a unit of Linksys, well that those never broke in my 7 last years to employ them, but if I restart Linksys all previously connected by the intermediary of the wire and the radio all replugs and each one goes approximately fortunately. If restartings of an end (and him), then each one which were the needs connected by rebootstrapping or to have their network management restarted manually. For me this means two tops of office, portable computer, and a PS3. Do not import what it operating software... I want to say, even the PS3 is closed with key outside réaccéder with the network... there is to fail obvious here in this unit. So much even in the best case to want to change some parameters, you change them, thunder rebootstrappings of unit, and then you run around the substance of cycle of power of house and the networks manually of restarting. APPLE probably blames each one differently to do something of forgery I would think. Moreover, this unit does not have any interface of sequence surprisingly. Differently on the market makes configure them an interface thus with you of sequence to light them and with your navigator of sequence. Not APPLE. You must install the special software of APPLE to do this. Naturally this software is not as well conceived for Windows (APPLE will indicate to you that the difficulty must buy a imper). Worst with far, sometimes it decides that you do not have an end of airport of APPLE. It indicates to you that it could not about it find in the range (even if you are connected on a network of cable). It just gesticule its shoulders and gives upwards. Since it is software of APPLE, if that does not function simply, that does not function at all. You cannot give him an IP address to connect to you to and since there is no interface of sequence you are wedged with a knife unconfigurable. The really funny thing is that while the software of APPLE indicates to you that no knife can be found, you can continue to employ the network and the Internet, because each other simple device continues to function. The only piece of software that * cannot * see the knife is the proper software of the configuration of APPLE. Honestly, it is madness. It is not Alpha-release even the kind of quality. And this product took place around a long time now. What gives you a good idea of the kind of support that you can await from APPLE. By looking at their panels of support quickly there be messages such as the "appui of APPLE known as which is a problem known with the end but there is no plan to fix it." The company uniformly makes the decisions of technology which wound the purchasers of its product, and if it determines the analysis of cost/benefit indicates that they should just leave it, is which what they make until enough people makes the noise to obtain it fixed. A responsible company fixes just its products if broken. Beyond this kind of state of break-with beyond-profitability, you can await other gems as what follows: the "port of USB turns the external hard orders, printers, and other devices in resources of network" the port of USB on this device seems to run the slow bone-crunchingly. Take your disc of USB and connect-the with your computer, then connect-the with the port of the end, and check the transfer times. Finished Ethernet of GIGABIT with a direct connection with this device I obtain 2 megabytes a second. Connected directly, 17 megabytes a second. An order of magnitude the blow of execution. Perhaps it is useful to divide printers, but last I checked, you can just divide printers very well with far from any other computer. Thus I am not sure which use this port of USB is because 2 megabytes a second will take one day to support a hard disk classified by normal on a new computer. APPLE designs some interesting machines, I bought a mini imper, and him and the posting of APPLE was beautiful without problems. I to have two APPLE TV, both carried out flawlessly although APPLE did not split exactly the whip with updates and by having the President you with the product refer which you invest the money inside because a "pastime" for its company does not give you exactly the hot fuzzies about the support. But if that functions, the support is not a business. In this case, the product does not function well. I had bought the knives without wire since the original gold of Orinoco on 10 years ago. None them was as meddlesome as this knife, none as uniformly failed as this one, and none was a so general impossible pain. Never with any of them have had me to run around reloading each simple device on my network to still give access. It is a failure of the product of serious products on behalf of apple. When that functions, its large, but he is not robust and this large does not last.

starsA real air port
It is easy to install this device, of materials of good quality, and cuts and design perfect. Follow the instructions and you will appreciate a good system without wire at the house. If you consider to buy it... right purchase it! (I am new in the substance of imper and I have fun with their technology - although in my work they employ Microsoft, in my imper of house is the chief).

starsExcellent Signal Strength!!
I had a knife Without wire-G of Linksys and decides to improve with Without wire-N. I bought the WRT310N and found it to have less force of signal than my old man Without wire-G. I returned to a local retailer and bought the WRT600N (very expensive) and signal forces it was not better thus I returned it. I read reviews on the extreme basic station of airport of APPLE and decided to test it. At last summer orders of the Amazon and of it astonishing as it simple was to install and forces it signal jumped at least 20 to 30% more. I installed it on a PC of Dell XPS with Windows.xp and it did not take but 10 minutes to obtain it installed. We have a total of 6 (3 impers and 3 Windows) of computers and that functions as a charm. The only reason that we did not hang it to a imper is because the cable of runner of road is in bottom and the impers are in top thus us did not want to spend the money to have moved it. We very, very are impressed of this knife and let us strongly recommend it - it is also a very simple design! !

starsExtremely Good, but not Excellent
I purchased this to replace a failing Linksys 54G router, and wanted something that my Mac-user spouse could operate and configure is need be, as I travel a lot for business. The user interface makes the setup and configuration nearly painless, but I need not have worried, as I have only needed to adjust the wireless/network settings once (when I set it up). Beyond this, it has been rock solid.

Another selling point was the gigabit ethernet, which I use for transfers between my Vista PCs (desktop & laptop). You could easily pay this much for a gigabit router from another manufacturer, so those that complain about this unit being overpriced are a bit misguided. Total devices connected to this unit include the following: Vista 32-bit laptop (wired/wireless), Vista 64-bit desktop (wired), XP SP2 Desktop (wireless), MacBook (Wireless), MacBook Pro (Wireless), iPod Touch (Wireless), Blackberry Phone (Wireless), HP Color Laser AIO (Wired), and a USB external hard drive (USB). All but one of these components functions flawlessly with this base station, and that is where Apple lost a star.

The Airdisk function is very flawed, and pretty well noted as an outstanding issue on the discussion boards and even in the reviews in this section. Basically, the connection is inconsistent and after working for several days/weeks/hours, the drive fails to show up on the Airport. Somehow, the drive becomes corrupted, and the only solution is to transfer all of the data to another drive, reformat, and restore the data. This got to be problematic enough that we don't really use the drive for any critical storage, but as more of a "transfer" location for files from one computer to another. It's a simple matter to disconnect the drive and connect to any of the PCs or Macs, but I'd prefer the convenience of a central drive for backup and storage.

Having had all of this information going in, I still had fairly high expectations from this unit, and for the most part they have been met. I would like to see Apple release a companion managed switch to allow more wired devices, but that may just be pie-in-the-sky (apple pie of course).

starsUSB Doesn't Work
Large like knife, easy to install. But bought to employ to him the ordering of USB above the network, and he does not function. APPLE knows that that does not function yet did not publish a levelling of software package in six months. Do not buy this if you want to reach an external order by it.

starsGoodbye Vonage, Hello Speed!
We had a Vonage Lynksis router that was never really good but just got worse as time went on. As a matter of fact, I think I'll go review it after this.

Anyway, I was wary of this router because Hubby has a Mac laptop and I have a PC laptop. I thought he might have access to more features and I'd be left in the cold, as is the case all too often with PCs. But no. The only thing I can't do is run the software on my machine, which uses an older Windows version. But I don't even need it. Both our wireless connections are super fast and strong, and I can access the items we connect to the router's USB port with no problem.

I love this router. Well worth the investment. Go Apple!

starsVery Good
I had a radio of Linskeys which continued to drop from the signals. The airport has an excelling signal and is easy to install even with the safety of establishment.

starsWhat's so hard about plug n' play set up?
Nothing. I am not sure of what all these people with exits speak. As usual with products of APPLE, you should not be a genius of network management to appear of the things outside. You just must be able to connect things, read the easy one to follow instructions of installation, and appreciate a fast connection of buckling of WiFi. Initially with far, the end of airport is smooth. All the other knives 802.11n seem to judge that it is necessary to add more antenna to their units. APPLE maintains things simple. And so easier to enter the borders of some space you have available for him. The instruction manual is clear and easy to follow. Even if you have just a very basic knowledge of the computers, you can most probably obtain this to function for you (glance right with all the pretty images in the booklet.) Once that the software is installed in addition to of CD-Romanian included, you are ready to go. Start to finish, it took approximately 20 minutes to me to obtain all in service. Worked seamlessly with my Juste of iMac and iPhone out of the box.

starsNot easy to setup, but still a great product!
As quite a few reviewers have already mentioned, the AirPort Extreme does take some time to setup. Not hours (maybe 15 min), but not quite as simple as other systems I have used (D-Link, Buffalo, etc.) But that does not prevent me from recommending it to friends and family.

Once it is setup it is very stable. Unlike other devices I have not had to reboot it once every week or two. The AirPort Extreme is centrally located in our two story house and provides fantastic speeds throughout. So far I have simultaneous connections running with the following devices: PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro, iMac, Fujitsu PC notebook, Nintendo Wii and two Tivo boxes. Every device has connected without a problem and maintains a solid connection.

starsUsb-disk feature does not work
Please, do not buy this product. I am a large ventilator of the majority of the APPLE-PRODUCTS, but the device of usb-disc ("Airdisk") of this product simply does not function. I feel cheated by APPLE on this.

starsFrustrating; semi-reliable; less robust than advertised
To begin with: the product didn't "just work," a mantra Apple likes to recite. At least I hope this wasn't Apple's version of just working, as I had to spend 1hr 46min on the tech support line to get it to function with network storage (the USB external HD that Apple kept raving about). Once I finally got it working, it would still drop the drive about every two weeks. Along comes a firmware upgrade, and then I would have to reset the system every two HOURS. This was followed on my part by a quick firmware "downgrade" (much like Vista users going back to XP!). Lastly, the advertised compatibility with Time Machine (and I have copies of Apple webpages touting this) was yanked. Now, if you want that promised feature, you need to purchase Time Capsule (or "AEBS with the features you already purchased but didn't get").
I'd love to get a huge external HD and archive all my music, video, files, etc., but I don't want to mess with the current setup--it works for now with my small HD, only needing to be reset every other week. I'd also like to upgrade to Leopard, but I won't touch that OS until I hear that it's really compatible with the AEBS.

Don't buy until Apple fixes the hardware!

starsAIRPORT EXTREME - A BIT TRICKY TO SET-UP BUT WORKS GREAT AFTER SET-UP
The end of airport of APPLE is a little crafty one to install particularly if you configure it with a printer and an external hard order, but once that in service, it is really impressive. I had a little trouble with it to obtain to accept the configuration of my ISP, but after a fast call with the care of APPLE, it was a bellyband. I also had to consult the care of APPLE for the configuration for my external hard order, but still, after some help, that functions marvellous. The printer setup was easy and smooth. Still, I recommend this product if you have newer model MacBook, MacBook pro, or any other machine of APPLE which runs OS 10.5 or later (leopard). Be prepared to spend a certain hour configuring it, but after installation, it is really an astonishing knife which is good in value additional time...

starsGreat in theory.....
...but in reality it is a headache to administer. If you are buying this router for the ability to attach a hard drive through the USB feature then don't bother. Looking through the Apple forums you will see that everyone seems to have problems with an attached USB hard drive.

My experience has frustrated me to no end! I switched to Macs over a year ago and this product is the only one that I have purchased that really doesn't work as advertised.

First, the router is too expensive. Especially with the new routers that Apple has recently announced with a built in hard drive. Even then, I would wait to see how the attached drive performs.

If you must have a router now then look elsewhere. Otherwise, wait for a firmware upgrade or wait to see how the new Apple routers perform.

starsHorrific buggy hardware
It is the worst APPLE product ever produced. With last software packages connection without wire is inclined with the random falls, the functionality of hard drive of USB is completely very useless that speeds are unsoundable, and if you have two impers to transfer a large file with this basic station will take longer than on a knife $10 11G. Do not take my word for him, read apple discussions for all the users of troubles of this experiment of product.

starsOne word: Apple
APPLE seems exceler with very that they make nowadays. In the retrospection they always made while work of Steve was with the bar, but back in 1985 the majority of the people were not enough techno-savvy to appreciate or to appreciate the computer APPLE Avançé of machines eteignait. So much here we have a knife without wire of Internet, but it is not simply any knife -- it is the vision of APPLE of which knife should be... Where do T-I start? 1) packing up -- as with all the devices of APPLE and software, you can expect only the packing most elegant and retained, sexy, elegant, clean, and beautiful, you will not want to throw the box. 2) interior the box -- withdraw the knife and you will immediately obtain a wooded giant, it is beautiful, sexy, thin and average. Inside the box you will find typical the, easy one to use the manual installation and CD with the software necessary for the installation. If it is your first knife that you can have need to consult with the handbook, but to be hardened battle of my old knife, I even did not open it upwards. 3) installed -- could not be easier, APPLE really delivers on the facility of the installation, all my devices were in service on the network in a few minutes - even with blocked arrangements of network I employ, and the many devices without wire which I have (PS3, Wii, APPLE TV, VoIP, DS, PSP, portable computer, GCV, printers). The installation on my old knife of Linksys took several days, and some things would never function - as the impression of network; on the other hand the installation on this knife took less than one hour and just functions. 4) range and speed -- the range is well better than my old man 802.11g, alive in a cement house A the defined disadvantages, like signals not passing by walls. This knife improves the signal for the computers which I have in other rooms. With the 802.11g I would obtain only one bar in a certain room in my house. With this knife I obtain three bars. Speed is perhaps the best party than you can currently draw; 802.11n is not completed yet thus we will see how it proves. 5) stability -- my Internet was not dropped still, the knife which it replaced would drop frequently, and would not function with my PS3 of the whole, forcing me to employ a connection of cable. This knife seems extremely stable. 6) aspect -- going again to the glances, it supplements really the other devices of APPLE which you already have on your top of office. Without counting that the facility of the installation, it is probably the second highest reason to buy APPLE against one of the competitors; it to seem right large on the desk. 7) simplicity -- with the difference of other knives it does not have a multitude of twinkling lights on before it. A light only lets you know if the device functions or not. Mine was on the green for goes since the installation. Moreover you will not find the antenna typical to stick outside on the back, really an elegant contact. In a general way the only swindler that I could enumerate is the price with the request. He is little one expensive than the competitors, but in my opinion the sorrow the overcost is worth.

starsAirport Extreme(ly annoying)
The Airport Extreme offers all sorts of advanced features and very simple setup and a sleek user interface ... none of which actually work or provide any value. The advanced features are difficult to set up, even with help from Apple's unhelpful support staff. The n-generation wireless is very sensitive to interference whether or not you turn on the "robustness" feature. And the indecipherable single blinking light is worse than useless when your entire network goes down and refuses to respond, which happened four or five times in the 48 hours I owned this product. I returned it and replaced it with a Linksys router for half the price, and how have a reliable and comprehensible, if not quite as sleek, product.

starsRouter crashes at least once a day
Setup is easy and this is definitely a good-looking product, but it's just not stable. At least once a day, both my laptops stop seeing a wireless signal from the router. I have to unplug the router to get it working again. One of the laptops is a PC, the other a Macbook. I've tried messing with the settings, but nothing seems to fix the problem. I did find a discussion thread on the Apple website that had some recommendations like turning off IPv6 or downgrading firmware to a previous version - I'm running 7.2.1 - but nothing has worked for me.

If Apple doesn't come up with a fix soon, I'll have to go buy a linksys or other wireless router.

starsreliable signal and easy to set up!
I have used about 5 different wireless routers (Linksys, Trendnet, SMC, Dlink, Netgear) so far and this is by far the most reliable. I have 4 computers in my apartment and it's a mixed PC and Mac environment. One PC and one Mac are hooked up via cables and two other Macs are on wireless. The set up took about 15min (mostly spent loading the CD software onto my computer - I used my PC for the setup), and the connection has not gone down once in 2 weeks. The design is simple and clean - no external antenna, so it's not obtrusive - I had it in my living room and it looks great beside my TV (since I have cable modem, I had to put the router by my TV to share the same cable line). The router also updates itself automatically which is a nice feature to have. I am very happy with the product. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5-star is the price. Routers are becoming a commodity and I am not convinced that an Apple Router is worth the $100 price premium over other similar products.

starsExcellent and Easy
It was an article very easy to install. The only thing they should explicitly indicate to you that is that after you have it all the installation, if there is no "discovery" (green light of IE), turn right all (computer, modem, this unit) with far and disconnect it during 5 minutes. Connect-the behind inside and that should be perfect. I like it. It is beautiful to look at, has an exceptional range by walls and floors, and was a breeze to be installed. More the user-populated assistance the site is exceptional. My computers are all the GCV and this functions large.

starsOutstanding
Easy to set up, blasts through walls and floors, the addition of the gigabit ethernet connections finally make this the outstanding product it almost was before. For those who have more ethernet devices than the ports on the Airport Extreme, I would strongly recommend the NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch

starsBest I've owned

starsBlazing Fast
My dad bought this for me after I obtained a new portable computer and needed in the radio for house... The asides of some conflicts of software with ZoneAlarm which had passed by again outside in the installation... this thing is large! Superb prompt connection, not to mention it advertisement with all the corners of my house, and it is an impressive exploit being which my house is solid brick, and the majority of other connections without wire become scrambled in the back corners of the place.

starsWhat Apple doesn't tell you but should
APPLE can indicate much good reasons to you to buy any of its products almost. I should know because I bought a terrible fate of them. But I "did not obtain" why I could want the station basic extreme of airport of APPLE (gigabit) MB053LL/A. It is true the basic station was adopted for the new draft standard 802.11n, but my two impers antedate the introduction of one or the other the standard (which are always in the outline) and the station basic. Thus I appeared to benefit finished of the extreme increase 802.11n speed offered 802.11g, I would need with a minimum for a new chart for air, being added significantly to the cost. I was even held around the store of APPLE looking at the box fixedly so that the extreme test of airport appears outside why I could want to spend a significant amount of money for a basic station whose possibilities required of good more money to be spent. Thus I did not obtain it. At the house I continued to ask me that the question, and then in a blog of MacWorld I found the answer. I was not even sure I had good information thus I called APPLE and the specialist produces some had to look at it confirm it until. The OK thus what should APPLE have indicated rights in addition to beater to us? It is this: ALMOST ALL iMAC of DUET of CORE of INTEL-BASED, MACBOOK, AND MODELS of MACBOOK PRO ARE PRÉCONFIGURÉS FOR 802.11n. the software for the basic station includes to open the software for you Mac Install the software after you connected the base and you will fly. This basic station holds account of connections without wire very at high speed. Thus why this product is in value $179 when you have a knife 802.11g to exploit your system perfectly good? It is kind as to require why you could want that Ferrari replaces your hearth of Ford. Speed, speed, speed.

starsAirport Extreme consistently drops network
I wanted to improve of my basic station of airport and replaced it with the extreme basic station (XBS). After workhaving worked well during a few days when it started to close spend times of network randomly and during several hours. Then it would mysteriously start to still function. That lasted much of days. To call the support of APPLE was a complete waste of time. I finally gave upwards in the dislike and went again to the old woman (supplemented dome) basic station which functioned perfectly since. Will try to recover my dinero of APPLE. I am a religious bigot of APPLE and an experienced user. Do not lose your money or time with this until APPLE fixes it. Go to the Web site of APPLE and the glance in the forum of airport to see all the people of trouble have.

starsTOPIC: USB printer & hard drive adventure
The total execution of the airport was amply discussed. I would like to more present his observations on my experiment with the support of the USB of the airport on Windows.xp. Specifically, which to count if you attach a hard ordering of USB. The installation was a little odd, sometimes the prog of service of airport is not identified the unit. The magician of printer also installed installs the program of Hello, a service of starting requested for a printer joint of USB to be recognized through the network. He is instantaneous to install the printer that Hello immediately my printer of HP saw and established. However, all the GCV on the network need the installation of service of Hello in order to seeing and using the printer (at least is which what I made to obtain to him finally going). The current use of memory is about 4k. It is annoying for those which also maintain the thin one of starting of list like possible. The utility of airport charges also automatically but I neutralized it without problems. Once that the things are in rise a printer running that the function is impeccable. Maintaining about the hard order on the USB. Initially, it MUST be composed with FAT32. To do this the order must be connected to the PC, not the airport. According to your A need for FAT will be a problem. For users of XP, the composition of the order with FAT32 is a headache since this function is struck or misses in XP, and the majority of the orders of USB come préformatées NTFS that the airport will not identify Unless you is moderately computer savy it is an experiment of frustration. In my case, the utility of management of disc of XP did not enumerate FAT32 while an option of composition thus me was to seek elsewhere. After you can seek and freeware remote loading to make the formatting in XP. The program more recommended broke on several of my GCV thus I could not examine it. There is also a prog freeeware of DOS which does a good work (examined), but it is line of order and can be complicated for some people and takes small Googling to find it. To also employ an original disc of initialization of Windows functions but is an important argument. Moreover, some versions of Windows do not support the FAT. Some orders come with CD from installation and give options of formatting. In conclusion, you can compose with the FAT by attaching the order to a IMPER or a computer of Linux. I have a partition of Ubuntu so that what I. Maintaining it is important: FAT32 limits the volume of file to maximum 4GB. No manner of coming to end it of AFAIK. Do not hope to store the files 4Gigs and to reach to them on the network, for example large files of media. I found the speed of transfer to the extremely slow order although I do not have numbers. You have options as for the access security, such as the password protection. In my case, the goal of the order was to transfer from the files of media and to employ them on Sony PS3. Since the PS3 also the volume of file limits to 4GB which is very well by me. But if I wanted to reach larger mediaI of size I would be out of the chance. I hate to run with PS3 having thus a portable \from drive which to run of the media is the best for my needs. I thus suppose the majority in manner of files of store of people below 4GB it will not import. You can also attach a small hub in order to use several devices of USB, such as multiple combinations of printer or drive. The reason that I give these 3 HOLDS the FIRST ROLE is that APPLE is not will upfront concerning format FAT32 required for orders of USB. Sure, the small copy mentions it, but the inherent limitations of this format do not deceive a this fact the trustful purchasers. I like it like knife and for the network management of printer. Ugly if you attach an order lasts and intend it to store large files.

starsExcellent router...once it is set up
I use this knife to connect to me to the Internet wirelessly in my new MacBook and my old four year old IBM Thinkpad T40(for which I have need for compatibility behind for 11g), and by a cable of Ethernet with my PC of top of office. Each three computer divides the same printer. I gave this unit 5 holds the first role though the installation was a nightmare because I do not think that it was the defect of the unit. My Internet provider is Comcast, and for some reasons the basic station was not identified until I connected the cable of Ethernet of my cable modem directly in my MacBook. I then had to disconnect and to restart the cable modem several times before the end of airport finally took correct information etc. of IP address, of waiter of DNS. In conclusion, I had to enter the manual installation and to change into a number of channel specific rather than to obtain a channel automatically because I obtained the interference. I wound upwards with the support of technology of APPLE of level 2 to go I by all this. In the retrospection, I think that I should have intially disconnected my knife without existing wire (though it was not connected any more to my cable modem) and also disconnected the cord of sector and cord of telephone to my 2.4 without wire telephone, as finally I did it, since those could have contributed to my problem of installation, although I would not be sure. Once that the unit was installed, that functioned large. Though I cannot benefit the highest speed because I need the compatibility of bacwards for my portable computer of PC, there is always an apparent improvement of range without wire. As for the printer setup, I also needed the assistance of the support of technology of APPLE. I discovered that if you employ Hello on a PC, you must download the sofware site of APPLE because this remote loading for some reason contains the components which are not available in the software on CD which comes with the unit. Once that I downloaded site of APPLE, all worked very well. The support of technology of APPLE is very useful, thus does not hesitate to call them. The unit has a nice aspect, and with the difference of my preceding knife, has no antenna to stick upwards. Moreover, it was a breeze to install a connection without wire blocked on my MacBook, and with only the minor configuration I could make the same thing on my portable computer and palm T/X. Once that I obtained after installing the problems, that I necessarily does not blame on the unit, it was a pleasure of employing it and I am happy with my purchase.

starsGood..... not great
I was hoping to use this as my NAT router as well as my N network access point, but erratic behavior and poor performance has led me to keep my trusty linux-based (hacked) wrt as my NAT router. I simply run the Apple Base Station in bridge mode and it works fine as an N access point and AirDisk NAS device. I need to support both N and G devices, so this was never going to replace my linux router, but for the price, I thought it should perform well as a NAT router.... perhaps our friends at Apple will supply a new firmware rev to resolve the issues.

starsexpect more from apple
speed is not reliable connection employed to drop itself often I improved of the software package, well better - the support of support of drive of usb is decent but frequently disappears requiring total rebootstrapping in addition to all parts of my network - built drive of usb on windows requires the apple software. donot can simply assemble a share of network as of other knives make with the joined order of usb - no software of config of sequence, you must install the control unit of airport looks at large the new software packages of hope will address all my points. if you do not have the stoc apple or other products of apple imper, obtain something of other. if you are apple obtain-the and appreciate.

starsNot up to Apple's standards
This device is easy to set up and use, but it is surprisingly buggy. See Apple's discussion pages for a long list of complaints about using it as a disk server. We have also had problems using it as a print server -- we have to reset it frequently. Apple seems unresponsive. This is an acceptable product, but not nearly as nice as Macs or iPods.

starsGreat speed and range
I replaced a D-link "b" network with this Draft-N version from Apple. I can only compare to my previous wireless network but this Apple appears to have similar speed to the wired connection via cable modem and definitely more range without dead zones. It functions exactly how I had hoped. Set up was reasonable for a wireless network. I had all information from my ISP available that the set up requested. Currently I am utilizing an IMac and PC desktop with a wired connection and a MacBook and PC laptop with a wireless connection and all 4 work online flawlessly. There are directions for MAC and PC. The provided software does seem to require newer versions of Apple or Windows to fully utilize this base. I have an older version of Windows which seems to be limiting the ability of network sharing between computers. I also have not utilized the USB port but I'm hoping that will not be dependent on the version of the software. The only drawback is the price.

starsapple
I bought a iMAC on the tooth of the moment and had to buy the radio, to employ with my portable computer of work (windows), this product is large and it was easy to install with my cable modem.

starsWorks with Tivo over WPA2
I read a lot of reviews before buying. Arstechnica.com being the most influential. I do not have any MAC computers or ipods, etc. The deciding factor was the 2.4/5K Mhz capability as I am in a wifi high population area. There was one tricky bit to get this to talk to my Tivo wireless adapter. I had to set the WPA password to something exactly 13 characters long. It was a problem at first.. but setting the password to something 13 chars long fixed it. Also.. it is pretty and doesn't look like an old indoor TV antenna.

starsRead the Apple discussion group before buying this router
There is a very widespread problem with this product. It disconnects from the internet at random times, often several times an hour. There are extensive threads about this problem in the Apple discussion group devoted to this router. It's a serious issue that affects many users, including me. I'd avoid buying this router until Apple solves this problem. Do your homework before shelling out your money. Unfortunately, I didn't, so am back to using my old router while waiting for a fix from Apple.

starsLong Range Easy set-up!
The superb easy installation, the range is astonishing, lucky find of GCV the airport without problems of the whole. I had the old extreme and the range was good, but the new end is really astonishing:)

starsYou have to know its weak sides
Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Gigabit) MB053LL/A
In general it seems like an aweseome router. It is one of the few out there that allows to reserve DHCP addresses by a mac address. User interface is really nice, but having a web config option would have been so much better.
I bought it to replace my old Buffalo router which seemed to lock up every time I tried to connect to a CISCO VPN from my mac book. This one performed beatifully.
The moment I ran into trouble was when I connected my IPTV box to it. Video would freeze after playing for a few seconds. I tried port mapping to no avail. I'm not sure if the problem was in a wired portion of the router or the firewall was blocking traffic it should not have. Unfortunately, the designers of the router did not give us too many options to influence its Firewall and QoS settings. I think it's a huge drawback, especially since now I'm stuck with a 10% restocking fee on a $179 router. I've waisted 3 nights trying to get it workingf to no avail.
I just bought a $40 Linksys WRT-54G and it works like a charm. It's not as fast and good looking, but it definitely is a lot more flexible in its configuration options. For the money Apple charges for this router, I would expect something of a slightly better design.

starsApple fanboi hates it
I am a defender of product of APPLE, but I cannot give to this thing any comments of positive. I bought this to replace my knife of apple "UFO", mainly because it supports to connect a hard ordering of USB. Since I bought it, it constantly dropped from connections of PPoE and the ordering of USB is seldom accessible. I hoped that the updates of software package would fix this it, but it made him worse still. After 7.2.1 of installation, I could not authenticate the hard order. I had to turn over again to older versions of software package to be able to connect itself to the order. I AM an enormous apple defender, but this thing is refuse. My rising-coloured glasses of can see well by it. Avoid.

starsExcellent
This modem is excellent. As a new user of imper and all its devices, it took to me as 1 hour to install this base of airport, but, I employed the discussions page of apple support and I obtained the answer to install this base. Maintaining that functions perfectly and is astonishing. I do not have the test the distance from the signal. But it is large.

starsGreat router
Pros:
- Easy installation and setup
- USB port to network prinnter or external drive.
- Looks great :)

Cons:
- No web GUI to change settings. You have to install software.

starsApple Easy Set Up
I purchased one of these recently because I like Apple quality, ease of use and wanted to replace my Belkin 802.11G standard wireless router to take advantage of my new Apple iMac 2.8 MHz system with built in pre-N wireless.

Setup was very easy and Apple does a great job of walking you through the necessary screens to get the system set up and running. Even my Sony PC laptop was easy to set up. Score one for Apple. The range is better than my existing Belkin and throughput is at least a blistering 130 Mbps which makes downloads of big files *almost* fun.

I purchased a Seagate 750 MB USB external drive to backup the system and do it remotely through the AirPort's USB port. Hooking up the drive is a bit more complicated - need to use the Apple Airport Disk Utility but again it worked well. Then the wheels started coming off. The Seagate is formatted in NTFS and Apple needs either HTFS (Mac) or FAT 32 (PC) to work properly. I hooked the Seagate up to the back of the iMac directly and reformatted the Seagate in HTFS journaled to optimize compatibility with the iMac. Easy enough, then I hooked the drive into the back of the Airport and communication with the drive wirelessly was great. Next I turned on the backup "Time Machine" in Leopard. The drive was not recognized by Time Machine. I plugged it directly into a USB port in the back of the iMac and life was good - everything worked. Did some Googling and found out that the Time Machine backup program does not work with Airport drives. Bummer - minus one for Apple. Speculation is that Apple will provide a firmware update for Airport that allows it to communicate with Time Machine but as of now it does not.

On the plus side, I was able to daisy chain two Seagates on the back of the Airport - the aforementioned HTFS drive and a companion FAT 32 drive. Both show up fine under Leopard and the FAT 32 shows up under Bootcamped Vista.

In summary, I am happy with the Airport Extreme Base Station as it exceeds all of my expectations with the exception of the incompatibility with Leopard's Time Machine.

stars100% Flawless
I had a knife without wire of D-Bond without breakdown during years but was ready for faster speeds 802.11n. I connected the airport, inserted the DVD, ran by the installation on a book of Windows.xp, and the presto - all worked. I was extremely impressed to note that I could even connect my brother multifunction to the port of USB on the back of the airport and print wirelessly. I cannot appear yet out in the way in which APPLE drew that in addition to considering of me never no driver downloaded - it just seemed to occur as by magic. For the fastest speeds, employ the utility software of airport to commutate the mode by radio operator with the 802.11n frequency of 5 gigahertz. You will lose backwards compatibility with the devices 802.11g but for me which did not import (and I am happpy to maintain my connection invisible with the neighbors!) I employ the airport with ThinkPad T60 and MacBook pro, of which both connect flawlessly at the speeds at least 4x more quickly than my knife 802.11g preceding licence. In a general way, it is a product 5-to hold the first role in a smooth design and of sim. Strongly recommended.

starsFastest WiFi I have ever

When I got my new Macbook I decided to upgrade my 1st generation Apple router as well so I also sprung for Airport Extreme. I have a 14 meg down cable connection. I hooked up the router and it took me under 5 minutes to have it running perfectly. I hooked up my Mac first to the ethernet connection and then went wireless. I could not tell the difference. That's how fast the wireless is. I could not be happier with this set up.

starsDrops wireless connections all the time
the wireless network does not function properly. The wireless network just disappears and can not be brought back easily, sometimes you can not connect for hours. The ethernet ports continue to work, but the whole point of the product is to be wireless. Also, the disk access does not work as advertised. The airport does not always recognize the disk password and will not attach automatically.
Do not buy this product until Apple fixes all the bugs!!

starsflaky
The site says my network will be up in minutes. It's been over a month. This thing looks like it's all set up...then just isn't there the next time. Looks like it drops your IP address. One of the first times I plugged it in, it automatically downloaded airport firmware 7.2.1, but I think unsucessfully and now the whole thing is unstable. Sometimes you plug it in, all the green lights at the back stay on and the main light stays off. Or sometimes it's blue. Or yellow. Green is rare.
This base station aint cheap. It looks cool...but I have to take it back to the store, just like the other guys who posted here...coz it doesn't work! Boo.

starsGreat router-typical Apple
I purchased this "gigabit" Extreme to replace a perfectly good "saucer type" Apple Extreme. After a lot of research, I knew that I would be unable to take advantage of the "n" speed (no computer with an "n" card) but I did hope that I could get the extra range. That is just the case. The output on this pretty little machine is super. I have always used Apple products (when able) with Apple computers (since Apple II+) and set-up is a typical piece of cake. It took about 10 min. from out of the box 'till up and running. I've now used it for 5 days with no problems. Just hope this lasts. My only gripe is that it is a bit pricey.

starsAirport Extreme just works
Took it out of the box, attached to the cable router, used the Apple software to set it up, and it just works. It's setting inside the base of my credenza and I can pick up the signal all over my home and outside as well. Use it for 3 computers and entertainment center. I've been using D-Link which worked OK, but this is so much easier to set up and use. It's also plugged into a gigabit network (for the entertainment center.) Have two printers on the USB connection via a hub and can print from anywhere. Love it.

starsBest wireless router on the market!
It is the knife without by far better designed wire than I ever saw and used. That is extremely easy to install and functions flawlessly giving me a range of connection which I could never obtain with Linksys. I employ it for (sometimes at the same time) 3 portable computers (1 PC of imper 2), a xbox 360, an office computer, a PSPs couple and what could be more continuous then - as 3 xboxs additional of surplus of friends... With

starssuper great fantastic the best
I have two of these and printing works flawlessly with bonjour, and I have easily config from mac or hp pavillion with XP pack 2. No drop outs at all, and replaces the dlinks I had. Three macs, six PCs, two airport express, and multiple printers. Most of the drop outs when I had the dlinks, running were from ATT/sbc/yahoo/dsl. When I switched to the airport, everything ran smoothly and easlily. Great router and not very hot at all, very easy to configure. I had to remove a gateway that would send its router signal to the whole system when it would loose it from the dsl company and confuse the whole system. With that removed, every bit moves better than ever before. I am waiting for the next version that can do double dual band at the same time. Don't use WEP ever!

starsExtreme Bummer
Supposed to be easy...? Tried setting up the Airport to two different existing WiFi networks. Would not setup and would not recognize the cat 6 internet feed. Would love to say it worked great but I had zero success.

starsFast wireless service non working NAS
Bought this device on Amazon, everytime the computer (iMac 24") goes to sleep the NAS function disappears. This device stops the AFP service, you can however use the SMB access but it will work for a variable time and then non of the airdisks will be available. If you use the NAS option beware that it will be a limited access. Since I bought it on Amazon and cannot return it I'll have to sit and wait for a new firmware (if it is really firmware related). Read the Apple forums before purchasing this thing. The "new" Time-Capsule seems to be Apple's answer to failing product.

starsBlazing
The end of airport (gigaoctet) is very easy to install and flames quickly! The whole installation of network is very simple with OS - leopard - much easier than victory XP. We are very satisfied.

starsExpensive....
Work as the charm, provides an insurance much better than my Belkin old man, neutralizes the access of my daughter to the Internet after 9 P.M. and the printer of Epson R200 handles. But: - it is so hot, it can be employed to preserve your coffee - nice in winter, but very uncomfortable during the summer - the installation that heat is very difficult and very a-APPLE. - change (even smallest) requires a restarting of it = falls of VPN - the similar products of competition are P.S. Yew appreciably cheaper than you want to order the access of your child with this product, you must secure all your neighbors to have WiFi protected by password.

starsMany Hours Work for Not Much Results
I spent most of the day trying to get this thing to work. I finally got it to work using WEP (WPA didn't work). I had to set the password on the router using the Apple utility and on the computer using the Intel utility. The USB port for printing isn't seen by my computer so that is useless. I connected through my other router because connecting directly to the modem didn't work either. I give it two stars because at least, at last, I have a wireless connection.

starsFast, simple, capable wireless network device
I bought my first Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station to replace my wireless base station (802.11b) as the old one could not reach the part of my house where I usually wanted network coverage. The Extreme covers my whole house and I get a strong, useful signal everywhere (even outside on my patio) and fast data rates. Using my MacBook Pro, which has 802.11n built-in, I can now transfer multi-Gigabyte files (iMovies) and do hard disk backups over the wireless network at the same speed I could over the wired Fast Ethernet (100 MB/sec)!

I bought the second Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, now with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10 times faster than my Fast Ethernet network), for my son, as he lives in a house with other college students, as they were unable to get a wireless network they bought (a bit cheaper!) to work. Now their Macs & PCs are very happy, and they were able to hook up a printer to it (via it's USB) & now have a wireless print server!

My biggest negative was reading recently that Apple's Leopard (OS X 10.5) Time Machine software will not be able to backup to an attached hard disk to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. Sounds picky, but with Apple, you get used to everything working seamlessly together.

starsBuggy Router Can't Deliver
With the last software packages, 7.2.1, this knife will break when you try to reach a joined ordering of USB by the intermediary of the software of Hello. After having passed by the forum of APPLE, I discovered I necessary to turn over again to a release earlier. Thus I turned over to 7.2.0, and it was stable during several hours, and I thought that all was going to be well. However, 5 minutes ago, I observed my network apple to still release (the reloaded knife). I installed many knives of company. Although, I could have selected a spoiled apple, I am convinced that it is a pile of shit. I did not try to do anything complicated. This software package was outside during weeks without the difficulty. Do not drink the Kool-Assistance of APPLE, stay far from this thing...

starsSolid product with a couple of obsure missing features
There isn't *that* much to say about a WiFi router in the end, but here's the good:

* Good performance -- I used to have a lot of connection stability problems with d-link and linksys routers in the past, possibly because the apartment building I live in is flooded with signals (there are times that I can scan and see over 50 APs). But I haven't had any problems with this.

* Looks good -- Most routers are designed to look like Japanese robots or something. This has the clean Apple look, and it looks good on the shelf under the TV with the DVD player and sound system (my cable TV and cable internet both come in near there).

Here's the bad:

* Having to install the Apple Airport software to configure or manage the router. That's absolutely ridiculous, Apple. Every single other one in the world has a browser-based admin interface. Get with it.

* You can't enable both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. You have to choose one or the other. I had a dual-band (non 802.11n though) a/g D-Link router before, and it could basically run as two access points at the same time on different radios. They could have different SSIDs as well. I assumed before I bought it that you could do this with the Apple, but you can't. (If you're wondering why, it's because I get better performance [due to less interference] on the 5 GHz band for my laptop, but I have some devices [iPhone, iPod touch] and might own others that only run on 2.4 GHz.)

* For some reason, Microsoft Outlook can't communicate properly with MS Exchange over SMB over a Nortel VPN IPSEC tunnel over this router (whether wireless or over a wire). The Nortel VPN tunnel works fine otherwise, and I think if you ran Outlook/Exchange over HTTP it would be fine (all other HTTP traffic over the Nortel VPN tunnel is fine), and it is just fine over IMAP as well. I found someone else had this problem on Apple's discussion forum, but there isn't a fix out as of now.

* The ability to share a USB drive over the network is awesome. But it has to be formatted FAT32 (or the Mac FS), not as NTFS.

starsRock Solid!!
I had no problems installing it. Worked flawlessly. Super Fast!! The ability to have a drive as a server is great. My computer doesn't need to be on to access the files. Plus you can backup wirelessly. J. Tarr is clueless!! Apple customer service is THE best.

starsSpeed and stable
I had 2 Airport Express, one connected to the cable modem and the other upstairs acted as a bridge since 2005. One of them died and I brought this gigabit Airport Extreme Bases Station as a replacement. It took a little time to reconfigure the bridge unit so that Slingbox works.

Very happy with it since. Slingbox quality improved and the reach around the house even better.

starsdecent router, only somewhat overpriced
my old belkin pre-n started to go berserk so i quickly needed a new wireless N router. i have several macs so the airport extreme was a somewhat logical purchase. setup was strange for me since until now i always setup the router via a browser. so you have to install the included airport utility program. took a little while to find out where to open ports for my various gadgets such as voip adapters etc. but everything works fine in my fairly large 2 story house (4000 sq feet). only gripe is the device is about 50 bux overpriced.

starsTerrific Experience, Worth the Price

starsA wonderful wireless router
Normally a knife 802.11n without wire should not cost more than $90. Extreme costs of this APPLE of almost $180. What? Its price is almost twice expensive than its competitors. To be right, these ' competitors are not competitors when you put their characteristics and characteristic of this coast end at coast. This knife without wire has a port of USB which enables you to print wirelessly with any printer with a port of USB or with the files of access of a massive ordering of USB. A knife of not-APPLE with the similar characteristics will cost thereafter about identical. Too much bad that late the machine of time leopard does not allow protection without wire (however)... but this is another limitation if all well will improve by APPLE soon. I must take one hold the first role with far for this product in spite of his elegant design and marvellous technology. Why? If you precisely prove to employ WPA (and you if) with a password runs (lower or equal to 8 characters), the software (called AirPort Utility stored under ~/Applications/Utilities/) will continue to complain that you do not have a valid IP, though you. I spent time much repairing in the direction distorts because of this. I would provide that the utility software of airport should have informed users of this condition often-data on passwords of WPA [...

starsApple offers no support for this product!
If you ever need support for this thing, forget about it! I had to reinstall my Windows OS and when I started installing all my software I couldn't find the Airport Utility Disk which you absolutely must have to run the router. You cannot download it anywhere (that's right, nowhere, not even from Apple!). You are stuck buying the Utility disk again from Apple for $17.26. I had no choice so I went ahead and placed my order but rather than sending it overnight like the Apple representative said they would they sent it via FedEx GROUND from California to Illinois; to arrive a week after I ordered it. When I found out I called Apple Care and they said there was nothing they could do! I was already in a pinch because I had to buy the disk and wait, instead of being able to download it (who does that anymore??!!). If the rep had told me it would take that long when I placed the order I would have paid extra for express or overnight shipping. But, they told me it would be shipped overnight! So now, basically Apple has, to paraphrase the situation, told me, we don't care that you don't have an internet connection (I'm connected at a coffee shop right now), it's my fault for buying an Apple product. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

starsAirport a Breeze to use
I purchased the airport to replace a lynksis wireless G router that I had to restart about 3 times a day.
Range is great - I get full signal anywhere on my house & yard (bout a third of an acre) and much faster wireless speed overall as compared to the Lynksis router. Havent had to restart it a single time. Ridiculously easy to set up. just a few clicks, it found all the proper fields and off it went! I use a Macbook pro 2.33 Dual core.

Product itself gets 5 stars, but overall rating is a 4 considering its THREE TIMES MORE than the mostly comparable lynksis Wireless G model. But that Mac for you. Their stuff ain't cheap.

starsAwesome Router!
I had a knife of Linksys before I bought this one which was useful to me well. However, I started to obtain too many falls of signal. I decided that it was time to buy a new knife. I thought that this was going to be easy, but it was not. I bought another knife of Linksys, but I continued from time to time to obtain a fall of signal on my Macbook. It led me insane. I returned it and bought a knife of D-Bond. I tested the same problem - released signals. Thus, I bit my lip and bought the airport of APPLE - the money majority which I ever spent out of knife. I was at my end of spirits. Since it was my first knife of APPLE, I was not going to fly away by installing it on my computers (a top of office of Windows Vista, portable computer of current Dell Windows.xp SP2, and Macbook) - thus I called the support of APPLE. The impressive support, left me say to you. The type went I by any I necessary to make to install the knife and to obtain all the computer connected to him. I also make connect my printer of Gun by him by the port of USB. That functions fantastic as well! Up to now, and me this knife had for approximately 4 months now, I did not receive any signal dropped from the whole. Moreover, let mention to me that I have Nintendo DS which I also employ with this knife and I did not have any problem to place it to the top of either. Useless to say, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and recommends certainly this product.

starsCould not get it to work after 6 hours of work
I tried to upgrade my Netgear system to this Airport Extreme for better speed and range. The router itself looks very nice, and well packaged. I have a DELL PC running Window XP with Comcast cable modem. After loading the program, the computer could intermittently see the "base station" router. Had multiple phone calls with Apple tech and Comcast tech support, tried re-booting, manual reconfiguration, reset the Arris Comcast modem, changing ethernet cables, and the Apple tech finally gave up, but would not recommend me to return it or go in for an exchange. Rather, he recommended me to go to an Apple store for them to test the router. The Apple tech commented that he had a few calls within the last few days with similar problems. I decided it was not worth the effort to drive to the Apple store, and returned the router to Best Buy. Reconnected the old Netgear back, and all my computers work fine, including one desktop and 3 notebooks working through wifi. With all the 5 star reviews, I thought I shold post my negative experience. The tech support guy was nice and patient.

starsEasy as can be
The installation easy superb with the disc was included. My network includes 2 impers

starsGreat Product!
I in the beginning bought Netgear WNR854T (knife Without wire-N of gigabit). I did not have anything but problems trying to obtain this to function. The connection of Internet continued to drop itself or connection to the knife from the PC would go down. I gave thereafter up and bought at the end of airport of APPLE like replacement. It was easy to install the airport of APPLE. I was on the Internet literally within 10 minute without any exit. My PC with the airport is connected at the speed of gigabit by the intermediary of one of the connectors of LAN on the back. I did not have any problem with him all. The utility to configure the airport is easy for the beginner or more tested which wants to manually configure some of the options of the airport. I used an adaptor without wire-N of Netgear to connect itself of a PC in another part of the house. Work very well with the airport of APPLE. Nintendo Wii is connected and functioned perfectly with connection without wire.

starsI have an Apple addiction
Leave me beginning right by saying that I am completely skew on products of APPLE. I have MacBook pro. I spoke about the members of family in buying APPLE. I convinced of the people where I work to obtain machines of APPLE for the visual goals. The reason that I continue to make this is because the products function just. I bought the airport and had it in service in less than 5 minutes. I entered and made some twisting naturally, but the time of total was even less than 30 minutes. The airport had an update of software package which I was alerted with update of the software of APPLE. That was downloaded and installed quickly. It was good outward journey the reloaded knife and me. The services which did not function before between my computer and MacBook (such as iTunes dividing) started to function. My MacBook does not have any more of the exits to join my network without wire after having awaked, and I have the great range. I say if you do not have a knife, does not waste your money on something of cheaper. Obtain what you pay.

starsBest of the best
I to have a iMac G5, Nintendo Wii, an airport, Nintendo DS, a printer of HP, and XBox 360, and this thing functions flawlessly with all. I cannot speak for the GCV based by Windows, but the end of airport was a breeze to be installed on the imper. The new provision of airport carries out the major part of work for you and very that you must make must click when it indicates to you in Si simple a cave man could... waune, you know. * A note: If you install it, it indicates its operation, but you are still not on the Internet, then do not restart the box of your supplier of cable and when it returns on you will not be in service. This did not arrive at me, but it arrived to a friend at me. Thought right I would pass the word.

starsExcellent wireless router..
First, I have to comment about another reviewers statement that the Airport doesnt work with XP SP2. I set it up wirelessly for my wifes Dell that has XP SP2 on it and have no problems whatsoever. The setup was simple and as with most Apple products it walks you through the process and I had her computer up and running within 10 minutes. If you need to share a (PC) printer through the Airport, it includes Bonjour software which will walk you through the set up process for a pc and in an additional 10 minutes she was printing from the Airport as well. If you have a Mac it's even simpler. The data throughput is exceptional and I have never had a problem with a sluggish connection. The range is also pretty impressive as my wife will sometimes go out on the deck (the Airport is on the second floor on the opposite side of the house) and has never had a problem. I recently switched to this router after using a another "n" router and had quite a few problems with it. The Airport is the type of device that Microsoft has never mastered...a true plug and play device.

starsGreat product
I must admit that I was very impressed speeds without wire which I obtained with my extreme basic station of airport. Radio of surplus to a range of 15 feet I obtain speeds of approximately 8-9 MB/s. Thats approximately as quickly as my old house cabled the network management was... very impressive. I slightly less was impressed possibilities of Ethernet of gigabit. All in transfering a file of 86 gigaoctets between 2 computers I obtained approximately 33 MB/s while the maximum should be approximately 125 MB/s. The two computers were have charts of Ethernet of gigabit and I had the practice the cable of Cat5e to make the transfer. The factor limiting device could have also been my computer write speed (5400 t/mn HD) thus I am not sure if it were the basic station or not but I just hoped for a little more bacause speed which one needs for additional half an hour above theoretical higher speed (40 minutes with the place approximately of 12) with that the file of 86 gigaoctets. The disc of airport I like the device of, but it has its exits. It makes beautiful to store protections of substance but the rates of transfer on top are slow and particularly with a slower machine (my old men 800 megahertz of imac) you a good nombr' obtained swirly of wheels of color while your computer tries to assemble the divided disc. (it occurs on faster machines also, but only for one second or two.) I obtained speeds of transfer with him of approximately 3-4 MB/s. All this said being, I think this basic station is the best left there for than it makes, I just think that it could be better. If I could I would give it that 4.5 holds the first role, -1/4 hold the first role for the speed of Ethernet of gigabit and -1/4 hold the first role for the slow transfer to the disc but to the thats it.

starsIt just works
I am new to Apple (macbook pro) don't know what took me so long... I had a Linksys wireless G router that worked good, until I wanted to hook up a video conference on my laptop. Couldn't hook up no matter what I did... then I read about the new MBO53LL/A Airport Extreme and how much more power it had versus the G models. I bought one and wired it up to my dsl following the directions and within 2 hours I was hooking up to a wireless video iChat with family! It solved all my hook up problems... It just works.
