Reviews:

starsNice lens
When I bought my Canon XTi, I bought the body only and got this lens. As far as I could tell, it is the same lens that normally comes with the camera, only with Image Stabalizer in it. I like it. I do need to get another lens, though. I would like one with a stronger zoom.

starsGreat
I purchused this objective, because I it camera help wished to shake and its work settled it. I used it for a wedding and her was largely no problems at all loved it.

starsGreat lens
This was my first IS objective and it functions large? They can look the difference with him in the Ansichtsucher straight and watch out on and away. If you search, an objective is in this distance and into aperature at a price, which does not break the bank of this, your objective. Do not remind ARE simple stop activity! Sometimes do not buy the people ARE it with the help of this however are thinking objective. This objective is also superpeace. They must set your ear near the objective, in order to hear that runs! Illustration quality is very, very good. Not "L" objective well however very, very well.

starsSharper than the kit lens, a good value, but IS isn't so impressive
I had been using the kit lens with my XT for about a year and it did a decent job for general photography, but it was terrible for low-light handheld stuff (which I do a lot of).

So I bought the IS replacement a few weeks ago. In indoor situations, the image stabilization has not done me much good. In your average bar, I'm still having to try to hold still for .3 seconds. Of course, I could use a flash, but it's a bit hard to be candid with a flash. This isn't a huge complaint, but I did expect the lens to do a bit better indoors.

That said, outdoor shots at dawn or dusk really do benefit from the addition of image stabilization. What was a 1/30 shot on the old kit lens is now 1/125.

Overall, a good deal if you do a lot of walk around photography at sunrise or sunset.

starsOk, but slightly disappointed...
I bought 3 objectives. 17-85 IS (unacceptible quality, too expensive, excessive approx., terrible barrell distortion, Vignetting and very soft pictures) I bought this objective, the reports was to be read, it say... quite sharp and it is... much so as the old installation sentence objective acceptable. I bought this objective for an inexpensive AM, if I need it for at home, since it optically better entire as if is, AM that 17-85 (however the inferior building intelligently) came then the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (constant blendenoeffnung). Photos, which took I with this on the 40D, are heads and shoulders over the preceding 2 mentioned objectives in the contrast expressed (VERY importantly!), sharpness(!) and speed. Pictures, which are taken with, IS Ontario, which are he, cannon not yet so sharply, or good looking, how those imges high ISO, which were taken with the Tamron, stopped, down to f/3.5 or to f/4. At this blendenoeffnung it is leagues over these canon objectives. That tail, which is even at f/2.8 the pictures, as the Canon objectives are still as good, and you have as much more artistic ability with this blendenoeffnung (vorbehaltliche localization, better bokeh, etc.). The only competition in this fokalen distance is the 17/40L (you slow down also at f/4) and not a useful distance; the sigma, which is equivalent with the Tamron (not, as good) and the wonderful Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS. But einzelverkaeufe of this objective for $900, a 1 year warantee without hood, has (the Tamron a year has 6) comes and it collects dust inward as vaccuum. It should be accommodated in a "L" body (if you mainly in the ultra broad angle to work, can go you not with the EF-S 10-22mm wrongly. It is, with few errors. VERY well and appropriately determined) like that if it is everything, you can carry price out, keep this objective. It produces very usable pictures. However for the small extra money, spring for the Tamron... They do not have to be more peeper a pixel to consider to the night and daily difference the general. The differences are obvious during linear rendition 25-30% in HP at all fokalen lengths.

starsGreat Budget Lens
This isn't the sharpest lens, and I wish it were a stop faster at least, but for the price you can't really ask for much more. The IS feature works well, at least as well as advertised. Auto-focus is fast and accurate, though quite loud. Manual focus can be a pain, but is usable if necessary. Construction quality isn't top notch, but it feels solid enough. It doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart, and it's featherweight which has advantages if you're out somewhere with your camera around your neck for long periods of time. The bokeh is excellent, very smooth, though since it's not a very fast lens, I wouldn't recommend it so much for doing portraiture, get the 50mm f/1.8 I or II for that job. At least until I can afford the 10-22mm or the 17-40L this lens will work for me as a good carry-round standard lens and wide-angle experimental lens. If you can afford, I'd recommend looking into getting a faster 3rd party lens from Sigma or Tamron, but certainly don't confuse this lens with its sub par predecessor.

starsVastly improved from older lens 18-55
This is the newer model 18-55 IS--It's a better lens all around. Fast autofocus and up to four stops of image stabilization means sharper images even in low light and without flash. Good price too. I haven't tested it yet, just made lots of pics. Websites devoted to extensive testing rate this lens as sharp across the board. Get it along the Canon DSLR you're considering.

starsGreat lens for the price!
Image stabilization for under $200? Awesome. I read reviews about the kit lens being pretty bad but found nothing but good news about this "replacement". It works great with my Rebel XTi and for an all-around starter lens, look no further. Images come out crisp and clear. I'm new to dslr cameras but the Rebel Xti and this lens are a perfect match so far. Love it.

starsGreat Replacement lens for Rebel XTi - 18-55mm with IS
This is the lens that should have come with the original camera kit- what an improvement! Image Stabilization works great and SAVES a lot of shots from the DEL key. I bought this for my wife for a Christmas gift and she noticed the difference immediately. We are very happy with it.

starsGreat lens, especially for the very low price
PER * very sharply over the picture, even far opened. * Low color purity. I read a test ([...]), that as normal quantities of approx. in this objective at some blendenoeffnungen found strong, but I do not see it. My standard test is to shoot bare tree members on the bright sunny days

starsGood lense for a beginner
Its one month nearly been, since I bought the 40D as well as this lense. It is simple a very user friendly and to understand lense. The illustrations are functioned good clear and it in the low light and in few phtography favourable conditions. It has a very generic configuration and can for all kinds photography be used. However this lense is not a very good to take to the extremely close shots and the shooting large articles such as airplanes. They need definitely additional objectives for fututre use.

stars18-55 IS Lens
I bought this lens as an experiment when I bought my new Canon Digital camera. I have been using Canon SLR film cameras since 1979, and had a number of EOS lenses, but I had never used an Image Stabilizing lens.

I am very pleased with this lens for it's use as a general, snap shot, family lens. It produces extraordinarily sharp quick shots. I totally recommend it for this type of use.

starsExcellent Addition to the Canon Line
I have a Rebel XT and sold my 18-55 kit lens to try the new IS version. The gamble was worth it. I sold my old one for $90 and bought the new one for roughly $175 at Amazon. The $85 difference is well worth the price. I don't have the steadiest hands and so the IS has really made a big big difference. I hate fuzzy/blurry pictures and this lens really has reduced the number of bad shots. Color is also impressive, particularly outdoors.

Picture quality is really good for the price. Michi (another reviewer) must have had a bad copy or an extraordinarily good copy of the non-IS version-- this lens, for the money rocks.

I also own the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens (a really fantastic lens). This Canon isn't as good, but for 1/2 the money, it is a bargain and holds its own fairly well.

My advice-- upgrade if you have the old and don't have the cash to upgrade to a higher class lens (like the Tamron I mentioned) and/or buy this lens instead of the non-IS version. If you can't find the Canon body you want bundled with this lens rather than the non-IS, then buy the camera body only and purchase this one seperately.

starsFar Better than the Kit Lens
I bought my Canon XTi Aufruehrer with this terrible installation sentence objective 18-55mm and regret him deeply. However I decided to buy this new objective 18-55mm TARGET see, if there were any improvement and I am pleased with it very much. It is an inexpensive objective, which gives a very good beginning in the photography to the beginner. And this characteristic of values, the each penny is stabilized payed. It supplies also good image quality, which a beginner of a USS 200,00 objective would expect. If you are in to buy your first DSLR camera Aufruehrer XTi I recommend you, around it with the Canon 18-55mm to buy AM objective as the first installation sentence objective. From please that it forgets you, the old 18-55mm IS NOT to objective, which a piece is ^

starsThe new kit lens
I have not used the old kit lens until recently. I purchased this lens with the XTI body. I am very happy with the lens. At least 2-3 stops of shutter speed improvement if you used the effective focal length recipocal calculation (i.e., the minimum shutter speed should be1/(the effective focal length). I can snap at the shutter speed 1/30 (hand held) at maximum focal length (55mm x 1.6 = 88mm). If you are planning to buy a new XT/XTi, you are definitely better off buying the body and this lens instead of the old kit lens combo. The difference of $100 or so is worth every penny and more.

If you already have an old kit lens, and like the focal range of this lens, the new IS kit lens will make you a very happy camper.

If you already have an old kit lens, and don't care much for this focal range, you may be better off saving for other lenses.

starsI USED TO TAKE REALLY BAD PICTURES. . .
It is applicable. Before I received this objective, I made really bad photos. Now I make still really bad photos, but they are much sharper! Is this objective, which is as good objective as a "L"? No., but, like we this objective with $1000 to compare know "L", not honestly. This objective is only $180. But for the money, you receive very sharp illustrations, the very material color (material), a picture balancer and I can the other $820 in photo lessons spend. "it is not the objective, which forms a good photo, it is the eye, which looks by the objective".

starsNice... better than kit.
Got this instead of the kit lens just to have the IS... i know, what's the point on a 55mm? It pays for me to have any help i can get. This is my first DSLR (used on the Rebel xti) lens so i have nothing to compare it to... see some pix above.

starsGreat little lens...
This is a large small objective, particularly for the price... Per: Very sharp compact good zoom shot distance for daily use picture compensation works on large fast focus Preiscons: Building quality Usm desire was not it f2.8 (however then it would not be thus cheap), all in all, which I would not say for someone, who begin straight from this objective, can impact be.

starsKit lens provises stunning images
I pre-ordered this lens solely for the Image Stabilization. After I used it I was impressed by that plus it seemed a lot sharper than the old kit lens. Well, sure enough Photozone,de reviewed the lens and said it put out resolution figures equaling Canon's best lenses. This was good news, especially since bashing the Canon kit lens seemed to be a full-time job on many of the photography message boards. I'm glad I bought it. And for very little money I can get images the equal of $1100 lenses.

starsFirst Impressions of the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens
I pre-ordered the lens and only paid as much for it as the non-IS, USM version and I think it was a good buy. The build is light and noticeably plastic ... and while it doesn't feel cheap, it does feel like a $150 lens. The good thing is the lens is very light in weight, the bad thing is the inner zoom ring may not be sealed very well.

I have taken a number of shots over the past two days but the light has been very overcast grey. As such, I have been unable to shoot outside subjects to really gauge contrast. The lens seems sharp and the colors are good (even in the grey light). The IS works differently than the IS in my 70-200. It is interesting to see images that were shot hand-held at speeds slow enough for a moving subject to blur yet have sharp backgrounds courtesy of the IS. I'll post a link to some images when I get a good sampling. I'll also update the review as needed. So far I would give the lens four stars for its value. It's priced right but the f/3.5-5.6 aperture, inexpensive build, and non USM drive are drawbacks.

For a comparison, I would give my EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM five stars for build, image quality, and value. I would also give my EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM five stars because it is simply an awesome lens in spite of the EF-S.

When I think about buying the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM over the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (non-USM) I have to weigh the fact that I would be spending $1k for for a lens that will only work with a few Canon models, but it would be well spent on a lens that would probably always be mounted on the camera.

starsInexpensive Image Stabilizer EF-S Lens, but seen limited improvements so far
I bought this objective only for the picture balancer characteristic, there to Spezifikt. in the blendenoeffnung and in the zoom shot distance (18-55mm, F3.5-5.6) with the installation sentence set of my Aufruehrers XT identical are compared. Up to now I have already too completely experience the maintained 4 f-stop improvement. Technically I that I should in the situation its, think for taking entry threads with 1/16 slower shutter speed (2 to the energy of minus 4), but up to now, which is at most I experience more like 1/4 the shutter speed, or f-stops 2. This is based in little subjective halfstatistic illustration, which takes the first days, after I received the objective. Possibly I need more data points. Approx.. 2 f-stops improvement is been rather continuously nevertheless. And this better success central rate in the risky shots at the untereren light. I estimate for the crucial AM achievement, AM a necessity, which high end to receive objectives with Usm engine at the double one, or mehr$$, since I understand that they have durchdachteres, AM circuit added use: automatic focusing believes that faster and the engine than that of the installation sentence objective is calmer.
