starsWorks Well Documentation Needs Help
I purchased the Iomega 33872 StroCenter 1 TB a month ago and so far it works pretty well and is much faster on my 100MB wired network than I expected. The documentation needs some help but a good network knowledged individual can figure out most of the issues. It's small and easy to store but be advised that it's a bit louder than the average PC so I wouldn't consider it desktop for non stop operation. I ended up putting it in the hallway coat closett to avoid the noise.

All in all the StorCenter has been a good buy and a very useful backup tool.

This is a fairly good product to use for data storage, file and printer sharing at home. However, it can be difficult to setup for a person who does not have an IT background. I also discovered that after reboot or startup of my computer, I have to login to the drive with a username and password, even after it has been mapped, in order to gain access to the device. I have also had to reset the device back to factory default settings once because it would not recognize the attached printers. However, this approach was successful and did not erase the previous configuration for raid or the shared folders. Despite the issues mentioned above, I still believe that the Iomega StorCenter 1 TB Hard Drive is a good product for home use.


starsDon't buy this drive.
This drive is worse than useless. Your computer must run Iomega network software to find and mount the drive, every time that you need to mount it. You have to re-mount the drive every time that you eject the drive or reboot your computer. If the power fails you also have to manually turn the drive back on, which is not easy as the power switch is a tiny button on the back of the drive in a hard to locate position. My drives USB connection was also dead on arrival, so I couldn't even use it as a USB drive. All in all a very bad design. Drive speed is good, when you have it mounted over 1 GB ethernet. And the drive is quiet enough to have sitting next to you. But these features do not outweigh the flaws.

I cannot say that it is really bad NAS but he really not goods:) Problems: 1. _ it be announce as NAS 1TB but when I it have connect I (vacuum) 908GB of space open, where 92GB have it see be it go? I was ready that it will miss couples of the gigaoctets but of 92... It is not that small, you can still buy 80GB HDD and it will be always more. 2. Snooper, I believe that it is not HDDs but ventilator, but in any event it is really noisy I can hear it the moment when I enter the room. 3. _ VERY SLOW, one it cense be NAS of network management de réseau of 1Gb but it give about 6MBps above of network of 1Gb and of network 100T finish some speed of transfer 4.5-5Mbps. I can not include how this can himself occur on the device with the central processing unit centrale of treatment 400Mhz, 64MB of RAM and chart of network of 1Gb but it be. starsSImple and easy, but could be better
I bought the StorCenter as an archival drive and found it fairly easy to set up on my Macs. I am quite happy given the price and the large amount of storage. I do find that it is not the fastest drive out there and is not the best for remote video storage and editing. It is excellent as an archive or back up drive.

I do use my music library across several computers with no problems. I do not know if tools for Windows are more robust, but tools for Macs are lacking... fortunately, my main purpose is archiving.


starsNot compatible with Mac's Time Machine
Despite some indications to the contrary, Network Hard drives like this one are NOT compatible with apple's new backup system, Time Machine. OS X requires an HFS+ formatted volume, whereas the StorCenter cannot be changed from its proprietary format. Secondly, Time Machine doesn't support wireless backups at all, though that may change.
Also, the drive much noisier than expected, and does not appear to shut off the fan in power saving mode.
I am unable to comment on the drive's good features.
