Fast!!
I often do not review but I must stop during one moment for saying that it is my last and greater external order. I employed it during a few days. It is so much quickly! I charged all my files of development and the search for them is so much quickly that I forget that I make it connect. It seems large too! I bought this packed up with the case of logic of case which is also large for protection and nice to have.


Does what it's designed to do and does it well
The fact that I have so little to say about this product is testimony to the fact that it does what it was designed to do. If you want a portable backup hard drive, you'll be happy with this one. It's not blindingly fast, but that is not a drawback in my view. It is very quiet and that's a virtue as far as I am concerned. I'm a Mac user and I reformatted it from FAT-32 to HFS+. I'm very happy with the result. As other reviewers have noted, it comes only with Windows software. If you're a Mac user and haven't tried SuperDuper!, give it a whirl; I wouldn't be without it. SuperDuper! works with earlier versions of OS X and plays nicely with Leopard's Time Machine. You can never have too many backups.

Much better than previous portable HDDs
The preceding orders of Iomega and series of Western orders of DIGITAL had. It is slightly larger but much more robust and reliable for the frequent voyage. Preceding Iomegas were fragile and the Western orders of DIGITAL did not save files by using the functon in programs of office. After my experiment with this order, I bought others for my wife who was very frustrated with her ordering of WD and her lack to save files. She is completely satisfied with this Iomega.


Nice and small
I making a certain reading here on the Amazon and decided to go for this one for him is size and the fact which is catches in USB two left because some had troubles with the port of USB not putting out of enough power to keep to go from disc. I had it only a few days but it is very well up to now. The glances and feels vigorous. I will employ it to go to travel on a motor cycle thus the that' ll put this thing at the test. If it does not support I will let you know. I would like to thus have more cable between the two catches of USB I can employ a port on the left side and the other on the right side of my portable computer. But it is right a detail. Moreover I have right fact the test and it also functions on Juste a port of USB. In short up to now I am very happy with the product.


Easy, Fast
I just obtained this product today and it is large! I connected it to my computer and was loading it upwards with all my files in seconds. I have thousands of images and music which I lost in the past, and do not please still lose. More support of my files on CDs and DVDs. Really a large product and in value each penny. I obtained it pink and it is not as pink as it appears in the image. It seems red, so much so that when I opened it first time I thought that they sent the false color to me. Not an enormous problem, but interesting mention. The size is good, but it is a little larger and heavier than I thought would be to him, but it is always very portable. It seems right like a bottle; I cannot wait to draw it with work and to see which kind of fixed glances I obtain.


Loses connection easily
I employ this portable hard order daily, but it often loses it is connection with my computer. To often save if working directly of the portable order!


Great back-up drive
Great portable drive. It worked with my cheap Acer laptop with only one connection from the enclosed y-cable. File transfers are quick with USB 2.0. After taking it out of the box, I had all of my music backed up within a half hour. Since I deal with individual files that are relatively small, I had no need to reformat, but that seems like an easy process as described by the Iomega support site.

It is a finished product, more, the Amazon had a handsome price, and also beat all, they sent it right to my house. Cannot beat that.


Works well but a little slow

Downsides: Not as much space that the would' ve of I liked given the speed of T/MN, exhaustions 2 slits of USB (optional but recommended). Upstreams: Small, fast, portable and not an important disturbance with my portable computer - a replacement of office (significance it is always connected).


Good product in small attractive package
Plugs in and works, no setup required. All I wanted was a compact external drive. There is backup software provided but I didn't use it. The nice thing was that I didn't have to delete the program in order to use the drive which I have experienced with some USB flash drives that impose their software on you.

This HD is a perfect solution for those that want to backup their files.
It is easy to use and has a good Storage Capacity.


Iomega Seems to be Best of Breed with USB Hard Drives
This is my third Iomega. First was a "Silver Portable" 40GB drive. Ran perfectly for over a year and I gave it to my son so he could finally back up his WinXP system. Then I bought a 120GB USB/Firewire "Silver Portable" and it ran perfectly for over a year and was just retired to my backup computer so I could buy a larger one, my first Iomega that's not a "Silver Portable".

If you've read complaints throughout Amazon about the Western Digital and Maxtor and others regarding some very important flaws like running noisy, breaking in a few months, and not getting enough power from the USB port, then do consider this one. This drive runs very quietly and only draws around 100mA from a standard 500mA USB port.

You've probably read that it's important with Windows XP to format your USB hard drive using the NTFS file system and then set it in device manager's "Policies" tab to "optimize for performance". That's quite true and worth mentioning. You'll get best speed this way and really don't lose anything except compatibility with Windows 95, 98 and ME. What are they, you ask? ;>) Also, the drive comes with an 8MB cache which helps give it such fine performance.

Comparing this drive to my other Iomega Silver Portables, it's supposed to be more shock resistant but I don't plan to ever test that. On the negative side it is larger and cannot be placed in a shirt pocket like the others. It's just a bit longer, wider and heavier - no problem at all though for a brief case, a laptop's accessory compartment, or even a small woman's purse. It runs a bit warmer also. Not hot at all but I'm just spoiled by the other Iomegas which run cooler. It does not have rubber feet but is not especially slippery either. I'm more comfortable with things like this by placing them atop a piece of Rubbermaid non-skid rubberized shelfing material, cut to fit, but that may be overkill.

From the other reviews I've read including Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, LaCie and some others, there didn't seem to be another manufacturer that I would have faith in. Not to demean this drive at all, but if I were to buy it again or buy another for myself, I would definitely consider another "Silver Portable" for its compactness, lower temperature, and ridiculously low power draw from the USB port. At this writing, they are still available on Amazon but will be selling out in the near future. They are:

1. Model 33634 - USB/Firewire 120GB for $100 (I have this one already)
2. Model 33600 - USB 160GB for $80.

Finally, software. The drive comes with a license for some Iomega licensed backup software. Backup software is very difficult to trust, and usually you don't learn how competent it is until your hard drive fails or some virus eats you alive. Crunch time is a bit late to be disappointed by your backup software. I very strongly encourage you to take a hard look at Acronis True Image software. I have it as do some friends and it doesn't disappoint. Even works on a PC with RAID1 hard drives, if that means anything to you. Probably the only program for PCs that does. It even comes with a bootable CD version which runs slower doing the backup than the installed version, but can be very convenient.

This is a great little hard drive. It is just the right size to fit in your pocket. It looks like a flask! And the same size, too. You might need to explain to people. Works fine for me.


Iomega 160GB eGo USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive
For the price it seems to be a great drive. Small, compact and easy to carry around. I had a little trouble with it at first because it was VERY slow to transfer files to from my Mac. After much research online, I resolved I needed to format the drive for Mac only instead of both Windows and Mac. It ran much faster! I only wish this information had been included with the drives documentation. I have always purchased Iomega products and will continue to do so.


Works like a dream
I bought this device a month ago to backup my Dell Dimension 4550 and Dell Dimension 4600 systems. Each system recognized this portable hard drive immediately and performed without any problems. As a side note, I only need to use one USB pig-tail on the Y-connector to provide adequate power to the device.


Not optimum for Macs
This drive ships with a "Y" cable, a second USB connector on a six-inch pigtail off the cable, to enable plugging into a second USB port for sufficient power (apparently drive spinup requires more than the 500mA USB spec). Neither an aluminum PowerBook G4 (1.67GHz model) nor a white iMac G5 (1.8GHz model) will mount the drive from just the main USB connector. So on desktop Macs you'll need to use 2 USB ports. Since the 6" pigtail connector will not reach both USB ports on opposite sides of a PowerBook or MacBook Pro, it requires use of either a powered hub or supplemental power supply (available from Iomega for $20, not shipped with the drive), either of which somewhat defeats the portability feature. A Firewire drive may be a better option, but the Iomega USB/Firewire drive cost significantly more.


Works flawlessly, great for business travelers.
I travel regularly for business and deal with large 100+mb files which take forever to open via a hotel internet and VPN connection. I got this drive to save files I work on while on the road and it has performed great. No drivers or any software was needed, simply plug into the USB port and start creating folders and saving files. With this much memory I was even able to create a folder for ripped movies which I can watch on the plane or in the hotel.

The size is great, its about equal to a large flask, which coincendently might be its only flaw. Everyone that has seen it mistakes it for a flask and jokingly asks if I "need to share something". Once they find out its a hard drive they all love it, just make sure your boss knows what it is!


JUST RIGHT
I know, you can get portable hard drives with a lot more capacity. But really, how much do ya need? This unit is compact, very easy to use and stores just about anywhere. I bought it to backup my laptop and store pictures on. You can use the iomega, windows or norton programs to perform the backup and you can just drag and drop photos or whole albums into the drive. It really is so simple even I can do it. Nice unit, good price. Don't know why the colored ones are more expensive. Highly recommend.


So far, so good
I bought this approximately one month ago and up to now it was free trouble - immediately recognized by my computer, supports automatically when one supposes it with by an arrangement on my program of LiveOneCare, and runs extremely quietly without becoming too hot. Positive... it is a fresh metal red:)

MacBook Pro Users: The Cable Supplied with This WILL NOT WORK
Just like another critic commented, there is a problem here for users of imper. The pro portable computers of MacBook have ports of USB on each side. I have successfully employed an older external ordering of money IOMEGA during almost a year -- thanks to the cable which came with this order. The cable has the two catches of USB on the long prolongations, which enable you to connect both on each side machine. But this hard order arrived with a stupid cable of USB which has the two catches of USB narrowly attached together. The result is that the pro users of MacBook cannot employ the cable. When I called IOMEGA about this, they told me the first time that they would send to me with the support technology of $25. Not, I do not think thus. Then, I said to them that my older ordering of IOMEGA functioned very well. Why couldn't I simply obtain another cable like that one? The answer that I obtained was that they did not have more cables as that (personally I do not think that it is true.) Did the person of support to the customers say to me that I should go purchase an adaptor of USB. (those approximately $20 run) basic line? Do not buy this order if you to have a portable computer which has ports of USB on each side of the machine. The cable will not function which comes with the order, and I think that it is that iomega then indicates to me, the miserable "oh, us cannot help you. Disappear the purchase an adaptor from USB." their a second chance with my silver plated order gave. But there is no excuse for this. Goodbye Iomega.


Easy, functional, and looks cool
Was easy to employ, the perfect size, and seems large. Use on my macbookpro and AM very happy.


DO NOT BUY IF YOU OWN A MAC
Beware Mac users. I purchased this drive as a Christmas present for my husband who intended to use it for his iTunes music library (you may know this story: the PowerBook has an 80GB hard drive but he has a 160GB iPod).
The problem is this drive requires you to use its additional USB plug for extra power. The PowerBook G4 USB ports cannot power it singly. (You may have some success at first but then it will stop mounting on your desktop). The drive consistently mounts like a dream on my spare HP Windoze laptop but not at all on my own PowerBook, so I suspect there is a power consumption issue in the Apple machines. Plugging both of the Iomega USB connections into a Mac USB hub didn't work either. Because the drive has no pass thru port on it, he can't hook up his iPod to his computer at all because both his USB ports are being taken up by this drive. We are wondering if you buy the (not included) AC Adapter whether the drive will have enough power to use one port on a Mac. Until then we're going back to a Firelite drive (which are awesome, btw) and will turn this drive into a Time Machine backup drive.


Love it
I like this external order. It is enough small to be able to carry everywhere, and it solved my problem "not to have the support for all my files". It is like having 2 or 3 computers in a device the size of your palm. Moreover, it is easy and fast to copy files with and of it. I hope that it will last me for always... currently only had for one month or thus, thus I cannot evaluate "his longevity."


best for everyday use
its my second portable hard order. I sought such an order for universal uses. Iomega adapted better for me but the only negative one is that its steps really 160 gigaoctets, its 149 gigaoctets, which returns to me sad, cuz 11 gigaoctets always a fate but this always better outside there.


Bigger than I expected
A critic wrote that it can slip this into its pocket of shirt. I do not know a pocket of enough large shirt to adapt this article. I bought a numerical Westerner in the place which is appreciably smaller and am returned it to me. The design of me is nice and functions well if you do not require for a small superb hard order but go with the passport of WD if you need more portable hard order.


Good but a little bit expensive
This hd external functions as envisaged. I had to compose it employing the filing system of NTFS because it comes bus FAT32 and some of my files could not be copied. Catch


I had to return it!
I bought Iomega 160 gigaoctets to employ it mainly for the support. After the instructions coming with the product, I connected it to my portable computers (IBM and SONY) as my top of office (DELL) but none of those could really see it. I visited the Web site of Iomega to obtain certain additional information but I did not find any new information which could solve this problem. However, one does not have it supposed complicated being that connecting an external hard order to your laptop/desktop by the USB. At all events, I could not appear out of what continues and I have it again right envoy in the Amazon. I bought Western DIGITAL 250 gigaoctets in the place, and I am extremely happy. It is even smaller than iomega and highly reliable. I constant my portable computers and my top of office as easily as should be to him.


Stylish but Lacking
First of all, I want to mention that Spéc. enumerated at the Amazon are not correct for this order. I was concerned when I saw dimensions which I would not find a case to adapt it. Prove to be the scale size for this order, as enumerated at Iomega (and about each other site which enumerates this product) is: 75"X 3.5" X 5.25"(L X W X H) and is the 48 pounds. The order itself and is well made elegant. It has a nice feeling with it and seems certainly rough. My greater complaint about this order is the fact that I must use the two connectors of USB to actuate it on my portable computer (MacBook) and on my top of office (G5) which makes it really inconvenient. At least on my portable computer, I have two ports with range of the hand. On the top of office, there is just that freely on the front one. I can connect it with the ports on my posting of cinema of APPLE, but still, it is inconvenient. I consider to buy a hub to help with the left exit of availability, but I am afraid which it will have to be a hub actuated in order to actuate this hard order. That means more cords and of argument. I' m also considering to buy the adaptor with A.C. available for the order to the site of Iomega. I also have exits with the length and the format of file name. I am guessing me must restructure the order, because when I copy certain files of my order intern lasts, I receive the error messages which some files cannot copy because the names are too long or they contain the inadmissible characters, such as the symbol of estafilade (/). that it is frustrating and annoying. I really do not want owe retitrer of the files more especially as this is supposed compatible being imper, however seems to have exits with the name of file of imper. If you seek the most convenient option for a portable hard order, it is not for you. It seems nice, but has some pretty strong disadvantages.


As Advertised
I ordered Iomega 33832 160 gigaoctets of me of portable hard drive of USB of the Amazon and it rested on my stage of door in the three days. I not packed it and connected him with the first of three computers which I use. That immediately was identified and functioned without the additional software or install the process. The same one was true both of the other computers. Three different computers and three different operating softwares. Friends are impressed when they see that it (adjustments well in my pocket of shirt) and I am everytime applied that I employ it. There are other orders which are larger in the capacity and/or more quickly than this one but I was after the portability and reliability. I obtained both.


HUGE, and POWER CONSUMING (for laptops)
I worry about the design much. The quality of a product must be important as well, but I believe that the majority of products that we can buy nowadays have at least decent quality - otherwise, people will claim all the straws even before I obtain to buy it. If all those function well and are agreed with my use, why not buy prettier? Thus I bought this external hard order. Apparently, it seems that Iomega tried to differentiate their product from others by an innovating design. The luminous red color and the money finish, which great combination. However, it was ENORMOUS. I did not have any direction of dimension thus I supposed that it would be about the size of Fujitsu Calmee, another external order which I had employed during years. Nevertheless, this me of Iomega was almost twice size of Calmee. Moreover, the hard order came with an adaptor for the external source of energy, if it would suck too much power of the ports of USB which it can disturb the function of the computer. Although that functioned very well without adaptor, it was enough to awake the suspect that this hard order electricity-consumes the product. If it is thus, then it would not adapt my use - the "portable" order which I can take with my portable computer. It is large, and power consuming, thus I thought that it would not adapt my use of the portable order. I returned the article. Ah, and the big size of the article made the design terrible.


Careful with support
After doing research online, I found this portable hard drive perfect match for me. I was disapponted after getting this product.

(1) It is 160GB hard drive, but, it was showing only 148GB total memory. It is a big gap of 12GB

(2) When I try to call customer service of IOMEGA, I found out that they charge $25 per issue.

At last, I decided to return this product.

Excellent
The Iomega Portable Hard Drive is sleek and stylish. So far I have had no problems. I love the fact that I am able to use my hard drive on both my Mac and when I use PCs at the library. It saves me from carrying my laptop every where I go. I like the red color and texture of the hard drive. However, it looks like a flask. But it is good because it catches a lot of attention when I am studying with my friends.

Pleased
This portable hard drive is cool looking and works great. Amazing you can fit 160 GB in such a small device. Would definitely recommend purchasing a carrying case to protect it when transporting. A slight drawback - needs to use 2 (two) USB plugs to function properly since it needs more power than most USB "keychain" or "thumb" flash memory drives. Overall is a great solution for backing up your desk top - definitely beats burning DVDs for back up that take forever.


Truly IOmega - Survived the DROP test
I bought an order of 160 gigaoctets of the Amazon, it was delivered FREELY and per hour. I opened the package and enthralling to see the so elegant order. I then composed it with NTFS, in order to more than copy large files 2 gigaoctets. The formatting took one moment to achieve. My wife accidentally dropped on the carpet from 6-8 feet. I just thought that I lost the order, but then after one moment when I hung it to the top again to the computer and with Veiled! ! ! ! and that functions and continues to make so much even now. Really IOmega.

Just What I Was Looking For
I sought a portable hard order to replace the model 5GB which I bought a couple years ago. I must transfer from large stereo audio files between my work and studios at the house and earliest did not cut them any more. This ordering of Iomega is perfect, and only approximately $10 more than I paid the 5GB (which was a business then)! The only small disadvantage is that it requires of two connections of USB to make sure that it has at proportioned power. The hard orders that I had connected myself to have had up to now two open slits available, but to ensure itself just I left and bought a small hub of USB 4-1 thus I would not be caught frank. My colleagues all really as the order, and a couple provides to obtain their clean, but as their initial reaction is that it is a bottle of whiskey!


Excellent little external hard drive
The iomega 160GB Ego is elegant and practical. I haven't put it to the drop test, but have been carrying it in my laptop case all over the Northeast. It's fast and I can keep my thousands of photos with me when I travel.


A real jewel of an external drive
I threw a narrow glance with approximately 10-12 external orders on the Internet, comparing capacities, dimensions and weights and glances. Yes, the glances were important for me because I envisaged the order for the voyage. After a associate of businesses made steal his book in the airport of Hong Kong I decided that my book would never contain still my ' commercial room ' whole still. The USB 2.0 of ego 160GB by iomega adapts the invoice in thimbles. It is very light, resembles million, aucuns pointed corners of boxy like all the rest, and is announced as having the special protection of shock in the event of fall. I do not project not to make any user examining to prove this point. My sincere recommendation for this order. More recall for protections: you can leave the protection of office at the house when you travel, but when you taken it of return protection out of the house. Take protection at the office, or your insulated garage, or another place out-place. A meeting of help beside your original data is protection only against the failure of hard disk. Others calamaties like a fire, or the flight, requires that both be separate a good distance. Hé, the substance occurs.
