Reviews:

starsGreat frame for the money IF ...
you find it at Walmart. This frame I purchased at Walmart for approx. $99.00. If the carton says more, have them scan the bar code! It should correct to the $$99 price. I have not found it anywhere else this low on the net. Please REMEMBER, all my comments are based on the fact that this frame was $99!

First of all ... it has a great looking screen! Very nice, CRISP resolution (800 x 600). The frame does just an OK job (a little soft looking) if you reformat pictures to 800 x 600 with external software. However, if you throw higher camera resolutions at it, the more detailed it looks. I reformat my photos to 1800 x 1200 at 50% compression rate with ACDSee. This means you should be able to get over 300 great looking pictures on it's 128 megabyte internal memory. This is probably a little more then the average person will do, however, if you want really good (did I say CRISP!) and your nerd factor is a little higher, you will LOVE this frame at the $99 price! It is as good as some of the better digital frames in the $150 to $250. If you can pay $149 or less (anywhere) as in the Walmart store (I live in Rochester, NY), then you will get a very nice frame for the money. This is one of those "best kept secret" frames.

I would also like to mention that ALL frames have shortcomings! Between me and my friend, we have tried MANY in our quest. For example, I liked the Kodak Easyshare EX-1011 10-Inch Digital Picture Frame with Wi-Fi a little better for screen quality, except I purchased 2 different units (of the same model) and the software was poorly implemented and had SEVERE problems on both units. I will write about that later in the actual Kodak review in this site. We have a friend at Kodak who says that frame has a 20% return rate!!

Now, I digress, the Norcent's documentation is just adequate. There are a lot of undocumented features. For example ... it will play xvid & divx movies and they look very, very good! You can even adjust the screen proportions by pressing the "movie button" on the fly with the remote! Totally undocumented! There were a couple of things that bothered me, like, display times were fast, medium & slow with slow being on screen for just several seconds. I figured if I really wanted to have a picture on for an hour or a day, I would just use the pause button. Not a deal breaker for me. Also pictures are selected in order without any randomizing option. Not great, but again, not a deal breaker because it does so many other things so well! It WILL dip into ALL folders that I created on a flash drive. Not many frames that I have tried were able to do that. You usually have to have all the images on the root part of the drive. There are a lot of nice touches in the design that really worked for me ,like the screen easily removes from its burnished metal holder if desktop space is at a premium.

Incidentally, my friend (who is geeky) found this frame to be very, very good as well and he is even more anal than me :) ! I am a fine arts professional photographer and picky as well. We will be doing more testing for those who care. Ultimately I am looking for a great wi-fi 15" frame with a decent resolution (1024 X 768 or better) and a moderate price (under $300). I have not found the Holy Grail yet. I still believe the digital frame industry is not quite up to par yet. I give it 2 to 3 more years to really get there.

More later on this review!
