Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player
Reviews:

starsHappy but still a sore looser
I bought this as an early X mas present for myself. (thanks honey) I based my decision to buy HD DVD over Blue Ray because It is the better format and has far superior features. I also took into consideration that Sony lost out in the Beta, mini disc and dat markets. I also felt that no matter which way the hammer fell The discs are the same just the format is different and the looser would be a firmware update away from converting their player into a dual format player (like the LG) and you wouldn't have a door stop. I have emailed Toshiba twice and the reply is that the format is different and blue ray discs won't play in it. Maybe I am wrong but could anyone tell us if this could be possible. All that we would need would be Sony's blue ray decoder ring so to speak and away we would go.

starsPerfect HD-DVD Player
HD-DVD dead? Not my collection of 45 movies. Even if I would have known that the format was dead, I didn't, when i bought it I would still have bought this player. HD-DVD movies are cheap, the good ones are released in both formats anyway, and there is a good selection of exclusives (Heroes, Transformers, BSG, Bourne Trilogy, Matrix Trilogy, The Island (gotta get it from amazon.uk) Knocked Up, Star Trek, and many others).

Also HD-DVD got it right from the start when it comes to next gen HD movies. Firmware update capable players via ethernet (Blu-Ray can't until Profile 2.0 not out until X-Mas), PIP special features or U-Control, HD-DVD/DVD combo discs, bitstream audio capable players. Blu-Ray could take a page from HD-DVD's book. If it weren't for all the movie studios switching and the PS3 and left up to the consumer; HD-DVD is far superior.

Enough venting cuz i'm upset. I will continue to enjoy my fairly large collection of movies in all the glory of 1080p and Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. PS get Pan's Labyrinth for 7.1 DTS-HD MA!

starsWithout regret!
I must not have sorrow after the purchase of the this excellent product even if has not been failed in the disposition war! It is the video that audio quality was sbalorditiva particularly for the DVD side that was more than previewed how much. Highly suggested!

starsToshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player
Purchased item as a gift for my husband who had researched HD DVD players and decided on this one. The price at Amazaon was much better than that offered at other establishments. Product arrived in the time paid for (rush).

starsNobody is Screwed
This unit is hands down, besides the XA2 unit, the best of the final HD DVD units to own, nobody is screwed. The movies still play right?Blu Ray winning out didn't disable your player or scratch your movies, right?Everybody who bought into BR or HD up to this point knew something like this was coming, if you didn't, then you are ignorant, and have no excuse to gripe.Quit your b****ing and quit giving the unit 1-star because the format war is over.

starsDO NOT BUY
It does not buy some players of Toshiba HD DVD. It communicates press to you declare that they are not more in the commerce than HD DVD. They have rinunciato to make them.

starsIt's A Shame Toshiba Will No Longer Support HD DVD
It is a shame all the major retailers (Wal Mart, Target...) decided not to support HD DVD giving Toshiba no choice but to stop supporting it.

I bought the Sony BDP-S500 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player for $600 at Circuit City then later bought the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player for only $228 from Amazon (now down to $196). I actually think the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player is superior to the Sony BDP-S500 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player because it has the following features that the Sony does not:
1. The ability to select the distance of all surround speakers from the viewer (to compute optimum delay time)
2. The ability to select a dialog enhancing mode
3. The ability to select speaker size of all surround speakers (my Techniques sound processor can do this too)
4. The ability to set the cross over frequency of the sub woofer (both my NHT subwoofer and Pioneer amplifier can also do this).

The first two are the best features.

Other than that the two units are the same: Both are the least expensive units that have the x.v. color and 24 fps feature. But now, no doubt due to Toshiba pulling the plug on HD DVD, the Sony BDP-S500 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player has shot up to $999 at Amazon from $599 at Circuit City (and by the same token, that is probably why the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player is only $196).

The HD DVDs are half the price of Blue Ray and the same quality picture (1080p) and sound.

My suggestion: Buy the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player for $196 at Amazon, then buy all the HD movies you think you will want. Since Blue Ray DVD movies go for $30 and HD DVD movies are going for $15, this will save you $15 per disc. You will quickly pay for the $196 spent for the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player to say nothing of the current $800 price difference between the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player and Sony BPS-500! You also get 7 free HD discs with the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player: 2 in the box and five you send in for.

First HD DVD set I am going to buy is the entire first season of Star Trek with the redone, 2006 special effects and remastered soundtrack on HD DVD. It comes out to only $3.36 per episode, half that if you include the fact that this set also has every episode in standard DVD as well. I'll get King Kong and Superman Returns too.

starsThis unit is a Lebowski Achiever
Dò this the stars of the fours of the unit pricipalmente because a disposition plays that hour is abandoned from Toshiba. But for me that it is not a great transaction. I have spold hardly the similar moneies on an excellent audio player of the bitstream from Oppo, for a disposition (SACD) that it is not only out of order, but never enough alive in the first place! Have.got one small but sturdy collection of HDDVD and I have wished a new player to play it on that one I would transmit to new the HD the dispositions audio (bitstream of Dolby/DTS)via to my Onkyo one receiving from 805 avoirdupois. They are not interested if the films are eliminate to you on this disposition. Over nex the six months they would have to be available for the reasonable price and the quality of the images and the sound is spectacular!!!!! If I can use this in order to play the large Lebowski for the next years in all the relative one glory, therefore they are a happy man. It keeps in mind who not is no electronics of consumer tries future, without R-with regard to the disposition. The players currents of BluRay do not have the ability to the implantations to answer to the detailed lists of Blu-Raggio 2.0. Beyond that one, all this roba morphing in technology of the information and all we know that what the curves of price/performace for IT are similar with the time. the Blue-beam could fizzle and will go to the transfers from the system centers them towards the satellites online of HDTV. I really do not take care myself because for the next year until that BlueRay/downloads is not making to mature, have.got one sweet satisfied source of HD audio/video to play with in short moneies. If you are a buff of the cinematografo that appreciate the video and the sound of quality and have one good putting to domestic point of the theatre. This unit is a rub. If wished to rent scratched on the copies of last release of Hollywood and the played ones through your loudspeakers of the TV, this is not for you.

starsGreat Value Great Picture!
1080P with 24 frames per second is just what my Sanyo PLVZ2000 needed and this player delivers in spades. Playback is smooth & detailed, much sharper than my PS3 and it passes through the high definition audio formats of Dolby True HD and Dolby Digital Plus giving me the clearest sound I have ever had!!! Unfortunately, great values mean less in this world than great profits so hddvd is on its last leg. I will support it till the bitter end and snap up as many hddvd titles as I can afford and just rent blurays. Also upconverts better than my 200 dollar upconverting only dvd player. This is the best that a 1080p/24 capable display can look!!

starsOn the Boulevard of High Def Broken Dreams
In late December I bought this player and the 42" Toshiba 1080p Rezga LCD. The TV is absolutely superb, and the HD-A35 plays all DVD's very nicely, although the warmup time is much too long.
Now, however, the HD-DVD format is DEAD, and those of us who bought it are SCREWED. I thought it would all turn out like a replay of Betamax vs VHS, with Sony losing again, but I was WRONG! Oh well, that's what makes horse racing so much fun.
The player does play all DVD's as well as they can possibly be rendered, so I will keep it for that, but I won't be investing in any more new-tech
video stuff untill the format is universal, and the Chinese are cranking out good BluRay players or whatever comes next, for $39.95 or less.
OW!

starsPoor Cancellation Policy
Creed that is one political defective when in thirty minuteren gone newly within your customer and that I try to cancel an article that you have ordered hardly and or incapable to make therefore. You must attend on it in order to arrive hardly so as to you can turn them around and sending them behind the poor commerce in my opinion. Over all I have always enjoyed to take care itself of Amazon but that one for sure has put a defective taste in my mouth and it will urge it to think two times before using your service still.

starsGreat Player, unfortunately a dead format...
I bought this in Dec '07. The player works flawlessly on the HD DVDs I have. Color and sound are fantastic (using HDMI 1.3a.) Load times are somewhat slow compared to your standard DVD player - it can take up to 1-2 minutes to start playing the HD DVD. The features on the HD DVDs vary by the group that produced it - some have lots of cool features - while others offer little more than an upgraded movie transfer.

Unfortunately, the format war is over and HD DVD has lost - Warner dropped them and will go Blu-Ray exclusive in the first half of this year. Only two stuidos left in the HD DVD camp... Walmart has also stated they will drop selling HD DVD by June. When Walmart stops selling your product - might as well call it day... Taking two stars off for this reason. There will be some good deals on HD DVD movies coming up.

starsHD-A35 is Awesome
The player of Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD yes, the departure is little a slow one (or I he would have given 5 stars), but the quality and the performances are perfect on my unit. Even if the HD-DVD disposition is cadenda from many, finds the unit of HD-A35 of the Toshiba is advanced to all the player of Blu-Raggio available today. Not there is simply comparison in the quality. The prices of the disc probably will fall soon and will add to more titles them than film to my library. In happening, plan to buy a player of Blu-Raggio, but I will attend until that the technology and the quality is not higher and the appraisal is lower.

starsNot a single HD DVD played without error
I recieved this A-35 as an early Christmas gift, it has turned out to be an (almost) complete disappointment. It plays my CDs and regular DVDs well, but freezes up during every HD DVD I have tried (10+). I have the latest firmware, the discs were brand new and I even "cleaned" them upon noticing the problem, but it didn't seem to help. I have tried for almost 2 months now. I should have returned it to the store, but I had already cut off the UPC code to get the 5 free movies.

Toshiba has suggested unplugging it and plugging it back in. That didn't help. Regardless of the format war, etc.. this is a product I would not try again. In an effort to be format neutral, I chose the A-35 over the other models because I have a new AV receiver that will decode the high def audio codecs. When it works, it looks/sounds great. But having it freeze up in the middle of a movie, overshadows any of its good qualities.
From my casual research, Toshiba seems to be plagued with quality control issues when it comes to most of their HD DVD players. If the price of this player falls below the amount of money you would be willing to spend on a potentially faulty piece of AV equipment, then go for it. More specifically, if the price is below an upconverting DVD player, get it. Otherwise, spend your money on a blu ray player.

starsAMAZING!
I am happy with this product,,,,work as expected, great video and audio,,,,even in some of my regular dvd as rundown with the rock AND king kong look fantastic!
overall I give 5 atar rating ! recommended.

starsdisgusted
What can I do to return this dysfunctional unit??I waited and waited and finally received Toshiba's firmware and installed it and still this unit will do little more than freeze at every turn. Amazon gave this unit a high mark which it doesn't live up to. What do I need to do to return it and exchange it for a more functional HD DVD player? thanks

starsGREAT EVEN FOR STANDARD DVDS
The little bucks additional I have spold in order to obtain the player of ship HD of the small flag of the Toshiba I have been worth after that learns that some more studies were falling the entire disposition of HD. I have known that it was that a possiblity and probably that it could pack it in on and transmitting it behind. Two reasons that main I have decided against that one. One is that it upconverts DVDs standard to formation near image of HD. And, naturally, already hour I have an immense library of HD DVDS, than still better creed they are one disposition. They do not give a lot but still it produces to the good diagrams how much Blu-Ray.As for the audio that seems to vary from the disc to the disc. And honestly, the prend-no-prisoners who of the SONY the sale of their disposition was a real one extinguish. I realize that still smarting from the disaster of Betamax, but that one was not the defect of the consumer. In any case, hour I have both and I have other things to preoccuparsi approximately. Who knows? HD can make a comeback large in sure shape?

starsGreat unit
That is a great unit. The delivery from Amazon was much fast one: I have ordered to Sunday 13 January and I have received it the following Wednesday. The unit that I have received already has had firmware more dawns to you here therefore was necessity to dawn. I have my unit connected to the Internet through a connection of BellSouth DSL and the characteristics online of the job of the Bourne Supremacy like fact publicity to. The two films of HD included with the unit (the identity and the 300 of the Bourne) moreover play very well. Moreover I have played transformers (HD) and a sure disc number standard of the def without problems. Use a connection of HDMI directly to my plasma of the Hitachi (1080i). The player or car-detected the resolution or is stabilized to 1080i because I have not had to make what rule manually. I do not have able receiving of new dispositions knows some but the player transmits the audio through the orifice optical that receiving mine (SONY STR-DB930) has handled like Digital dolby 5,1 and DTS 5.1. Other a famous one: A critic of Oynko 905 on the Web site of Crutchfield has said that the A35 was the only player of HD DVD that has transmitted TrueHD correctly dolby to receiving its.

starsnice player works well if there were hd-dvd's available.
no withe of editions the player but I thinks that the swindled one from the blue-beam that assumes the direction of the market hour I has obtained a doorstop.

starsHD to the BONE!
The player of Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD of all the thing that felt to speak about the disposition is finishing, still has gone to buy this player like modernization to my player of XBOX HD-DVD. I have thought next to the half of prices that I will obtain a full player of characteristic HD-DVD for my accumulation of films and to believe it is to align worthy it. I have coupled the player to receiving mine that of Onkyo TX-SR875 I have not never felt the sound from my rich system therefore like hour. All have gone to still watch mine the HD-DVD films. Bitstreams of this audio player to receiving without the problems. I have begun to feel the sounds details to you in the film that is not felt to me never before. Even if you have receiving that multichannel this player is able inner of decodification of the dispositions knows some last and transmits it system to your of the center-theatre. As far as the quality of the image it hopes that me here is is a great difference the quality of the image from my SONY 46' 1080p is more cutting and free sense. You can select the regulations of 1080p/24 leaving from the player and will see that the difference. Also upconverting of DVDs standard remarkable difference in the quality of the image is magnificent you will find one. You have the orifice of Ethernet for the modernization of your firmware of the player and the access to the content online and of the additional characteristics of the film. I have not demanded the modernization of my firmware of the player while already it was modernized from the box. I could not really find a problem with this player the only thing I can be complained of are the external resumption seems little expensive and I wish that it has one characteristic of the light bulb but to this price I do not take care myself. To add it in on if you have a collection of HD-DVD this is that a player for you. To align defines the meant one of high-Definition.

starsFor once it's true
My HD-A35 is coupled until to a maximum of 50"widescreen the plasma in 1080p. short and cake, like the owner I can say to the diference between a HD video and a normal DVD, no of my friends can. They are so as to pleasant I am not considering the Blue-beam finchè their prices fall. I have too much normal DVD far away. It does not import as the disposition war turns out cannot go badly with this player of HD.

starsHighly Satisfied...
Hello everybody,

I was on the lookout for a high def player for several months. And after researching for months I decided to go with the Toshiba HD-A35 since I wanted a full HD (1080P) player to complement my Samsung LN-T4661f and my Sony HT-DDW995 5.1-Channel Home Theater System both of which support 1080P. Since I bought my player just last month it was already updated with the latest firmware.

The setup was very easy. Connected the player to the home theater system and it was ready to use.

The picture quality is amazing and the home theater system pumps out some nice sound. 300, Transformers (both HD DVDs) looked awesome on the TV.

Also watched the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy (DVD) using this player and it produced some stunning picture and sound quality. The upconverting is really good.

I bought this through amazon.com and due to their price protection policy for the initial 30 days I got back about [..] for this player and still have 10 more days to go.

I hope more people buy and enjoy this player.

thanks,
Murthy here

starsHD-DVD Blu Ray who cares live for now
It has bought the A20 and it is yes pic A35 that healthy large bookmark the player closed outside of using the turn of feeding on for means of the key of the game worked for me on the shunting line standard HD and DVD5.I have behind not had problems with A20 or A35 and I we use them hard we do not watch registry very. A lucciola Farscape and Andromeda of the dvds of the TV mainly nearly has been forgotten, wars therefore never observed of Jr of the county of Brisco (on purpose was not a D/L DVD5 that upconverted it) good.Dvd that it is taken care after that it calm surplus my players of Toshiba who enjoy pic and healthy equally large.

starsGreat so far.
Excellent unit so far, had trouble with one disk, which cleared up after I cleaned it. Have seen the 300, sense & sensibility and dreamgirls so far.

One note - a reviewer said that HDMI was needed for the new surround sound formats, that is not exactly true. I have an older receiver (Pass-through HDMI), so I can't feed the formats by HDMI, but they are available through the analog surround signals. I previously had the unit connected by fiber optic, went to analog surround, the sound was very good.

starsPicture is wonderful. Sound capabilities confusing
I have the player connected to a onkyo sr705 and the image is superb. I have not had some important problems with this player. I have only one rest. I really do not know to regulate this player in order to produce the bitstream to receiving mine so as to it can decode the dispositions audio rather than the player.

starsexcellent unit with a minor downfall
This player is only what that excelent I do not appreciate are you I must use HDMI in order to obtain the new one I encircle the sound. I have a reciever that of denon the AVR 5803A this is a reciever expensive and do not wish to replace it hardly in order to obtain the new dispositions but still sound the excellent image is large

starsFull of features and an experience un-matched by Blu-Ray
For how much the audio quality and video the greater part of the players of 1080p HD (comprised Blue-beam) supplies turns out to you exceptional. This player effectively produces to a spectacular shunting line image (upconversion the standard is narcotic enough) and the audio wonderful survey. However, this player and HD DVD in a generalized manner, have many possibilities that they are ineguagliate from the Blue-beam and players of HD DVD are less expensive to possess! Upconversion of shunting line standard DVD on this player he is enough remarkable and it is an improvement surplus the other players of HD DVD and all the players of the Blue-beam, particularly over the last one upconversion aweful of the player.... HD of Samsung HD DVD/Blu-ray. In more, this player has possibility of the SEED, the menu dynamic, fotoricettore-allowed ability and is easilly expandible. That one is something that you cannot say approximately a single player of the Blue-beam.... and is one fraction of the cost. Moreover it supports the deep color, the CCE and the directed them audio escape digita so as to your DTS HD and receiving dolby of TrueHD can make the decodification audio. That is the greater part of the rich player of the characteristic on the market and is more little expensive of the player at all less able of the Blue-beam. It takes a decision sly and it buys this player or the HD-A30 (if you do not have need of the digital audio directed them). the Blue-beam has 20GB' s of additional storage on a transaction that large of the disc... you can always put the additional characteristics of ndemnity on an other disc. It is the much hardest one to allow to the players of the Blue-beam of having menu interactive you, the fotoricettore-allowed characteristics and the espandibilità that all the players of HD DVD have and have had since in the first place they have been freed. With the Blue-beam paid more and you obtain than less.

starsI like it.
I have tried some dvd and a hd-dvd ago far away. The things are working much good and love the quality of HD and the on-converted quality in of the image of dvd. the only thing that I do not appreciate is that it is necessary a minute to preheating and it obtains waits for in order to play when I ignite it, but task that could be normal with these blots some. However, a month after that from this machine that the price falls $150,00 and Toshiba hour they decide to renounce to make the disposition of the hd-dvd. They are not a happy camper.

starsHD, sure - but the upconversion is brilliant!
All the collusion between Sony and the movie studios can't cover up that the upconversion of standard DVD's to 1080p on the HD-A35 is soooo far beyond even the best and newest Blu-Ray player. And the PIP - sweet!

Now that I have this machine, it's clear to me that HD-DVD is by far the superior technology for the consumer. The upconversion the machine performs on my existing DVD library alone is worth twice what it cost!

starsAlmost perfect
I have personally owned almost every flavor of HD DVD player, starting with the HD-A1. This is by far the most balanced of the players and has the best audio section, (I.E. Transformers wow the transformations have so much detail its staggering, I cant believe what you here in there) I have heard small details with this unit (connected via-optical cable) that I have not heard with any of the others. The HD-A1 was better at up converting SD DVD's but had nothing on the audio section. The HD-XA2 was a better video up converter as well, had a better audio section that the 1 series but not as good as this unit. Now on to the HD DVD performance. This unit is by far the champ, it outperforms the rest of the pack; Batman Begins the details, the snow just breathtaking. I would give it 5 stars if it was as good as the HD-XA2 at SD video up conversion. I highly recommend this unit having owned all but the HD-XA1 which was only cosmetically different from the HD-A1, and the HD-a20.

starsGreat upgrade to my Xbox 360 HD DVD Add on
Before that beginnings, to the starter shaft of Tom V, the better thing to make must use the hdmi in order to observe your films but since your TV is older here why you have used the member in the handbook, it declares that one since the component cables are not hdcp compliant, it upconvert hello to def. Are not more than a limitation that the studies have tax to the suppliers rather than to a defect with the player. I have bought Toshiba HD A35 as a modernization to my Xbox360 adds over. Hour I have had the Toshiba for approximately a week and works large. The only thing is that when first feeding on the player, it you could take like 20 affinchè the screen welcome second you still ignite yourselves, but I they must dawn for before turns firmware, of way that the problem could have been resolved. It is great transaction. Sembr of large transformers HDDVD on my Samsung LCD 1080P and I they have not connected it with HDMI. It is working with the member to 1080i, that commuterò finally outside to cables of HDMI 1,3 (must buy some online). I have bought the player of Toshiba HD A35 because I have compared spec., the characteristics and the price to that one of the comparable players blueray and have thought that the high player of the extremity of the Toshiba was a transaction better than the blueray. I do not buy in articles or the relationships from the consumers and the experts who twist the information or hide the information in order to obtain an edge. I have had my first player of the dvd in 1998 in which the greater part of the other anchor they were using the vhs, so as to I consider myself informed well and I try to continue with technology and electronics. Make your search and hardly you do not count on that what the opinions of the consumers are, comprised mines. As an example, if you have passed in review with the varied film and hi places of the def, you will find articles of as the group of NPD it has marked that the independent players of Blueray have had a cable of 93% in the sales of the implantations the week to follow the news of the Warner Bros. More subsequently, NPD has marked that the figures were due because of the free players who have been offers with HDTV and that the figures do not include the sales of the Amazon. Blueray introduces the advantages over HDDVD like 50gb ability, the ablity to supply the audio not compressed of PCM 7,1, more support of the study. Moreover it has it is downside. Blueray has capienza 50gb however the studies completely does not use all the audio of the 7,1 PCM Lossless is pleasant, but the space amount that would take lascerebbe little room for the special characteristics. More hour, us probably they are not 5 films blueray not even that they have track of the audio of PCM 7.1. Other weaknesses of blueray are the 2,0 versions of profiles 1,0, 1,1, than the firmwares they will not repair. To the Web site of the bluerays, they make publicity to the interattività with the Internet that supplies additional satisfying from your film blueray. This characteristic ago part really of profile 2,0 that is not livell still. Profile 1,1 has exited hardly for the player blueray of Panasonic that has the possibility of the image in the image that the players of HD DVD have had from the beginning with the fotoricettore-allowed connettività. The other weakness is that is codified region. Therefore if you come from an other country or wished to order a import, you cannot because of the region coding. HD DVD does not have region coding. The sounds as SONY and Blueray are trying mungere as well as from the latta consumer like until that the consumer not wide awake and realize that what is making. I have calculated outside along time makes as SONY greedy is with their normal images of dvds. SONY would exit with the versions standard of their films, then special editions some months more subsequently and bitrate editions then supposed of Superbit to higher. They would not include the audio of DTS in the normal versions, but they would add it in the versions of Superbit. Behind before that this high war of Def never began, you would see on the posterior inferior part of the cover on films of the SONY, acquired mastery of in the high definition on dvd a standard. That kind of false publicity is that one when all the CE junky knows that dvd the standards are 480p in the best one of the cases. SONY still puts that acquired hour mastery of in high the slogan of Def. An other example of DVD of greed of the SONY is not with their CD of music of some years before. The crap of the administration of rights of Digital that they have had on their CD of music because they have been it scares to you approximately pirating therefore defective that they have disorderd on the computers of people. It does not obtain the twisted one to me, the Marches of the SONY the sure bonds film and I its buys me appreciate in the disposition standard, but knowing they are, I will not buy a player blueray until making all the profiles and the price of films and the players falls considerable. With that one said, it takes your own decision informed approximately which player to obtain. It keeps in mind this, dvd normal anchor strike both the dispositions joined from a great margin.

starsHD DVD has more of a conscience
Probably the best thing about the A35 is what the reviewers have written on these pages, hence the 4 1/2 star rating. This is a great machine, with what I hope, will be a progressive future.
But with the space here, I'd like to relay some info on the competition.
Sony, for over 25 years, has tried to push new formats down consumer's throats, with over-priced, overrated devices that flop.
But the ruthlessness [ Toshiba itself, is not unsullied ] in which they are fighting this format " war," is best described by a R.C.A. industry insider, "...& in all my years at this level, I've never been witness to the viciousness in which Sony is employing. In new formats they know of their international reputation as loser's, & as if not to lose face ever again, they're using every mean trick to convince the consumer, that they, after spending billions in media propaganda, know what's good for them. At this rate, their own mother's are not safe."
If there is going to be a winner out of all this, I hope it's us, & not the greed-creeps wearing $6000.00 suits in Tokyo.

starsGreat Player... only one issue found
This unit takes the place of my HD-A2 model. I have it connected via component cables to an older Toshiba 50H81 Rear Projection HDTV and I use the HDMI cable to an Onkyo TX-SR605 for the better audio.

The only problem I found with this HD-A35 is when switching between Standard DVD's and HD-DVD's with the Onkyo TX-SR605 turned on.

I have to enter the HD-A35 Setup menu every time I switch media types. I select "up to 1080i" when using a HD-DVD and have to change it to "up to 480P' for Standard DVD's. With the receiver turned off, it prompts that up-converting was prohibited... then auto switch to standard DVD resolution.

Toshiba Tech support doesn't believe this is a problem, so anyone using component cables will likely find this an unnecessary nuisance.

Other than that, the HD-A35 is a great player and has a slightly better picture than the HD-A2. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio to my Onkyo TX-SR605 is great!

starsHD Player
Outstanding picture quality. Quiet operation. Didn't like that I could not program the DVD remote to my Sony TV remote, but thats probably more Sony's fault than Toshiba due to the format war. I think its to bad HD will probably loose out on the format war because this is definately a better player than any blu-ray I've seen and at a FAR more reasonable price. I own a PS3 also, but like this HD player better for movies.

starsGreat HD Player
That is my first player of HD at all of the sort. I could not be happier with it; the image and the healthy quality are superb, particularly on mine 46"1080p, that I have obtained after the purchase of the this player. The additional characteristics of a HD player are narcotic. I have ordered this from Amazon.com and has assumed the direction of 2 weeks in order to arrive to my hatch, that it was unappreciated, but except that one the transaction was excellent smooth. One word of warning, control in the war of blue-beam HD-DVD before the purchase of the this; Recently I have read that the Blue-beam can gain the war, I do not buy something that YOU KNEW you were obsolete during some months, or a year in the best one of the cases.

starsToshiba HD DVD players just get better
This is my third HD DVD player, first since the WB annoucement. I initially had the HD-A2 when I made my jump to HD DVD even though I have a PS3 already. I wanted a dedicated player to watch Planet Earth on and I'm huge fan of picture in picture extra contents. The A2 was moved to my bedroom when I got the A20 for 1080p capabilities. And now, for another upgrade, I went for the HD-A35 and sold my HD-A20 to my friend just last week.

This is the top of the line in the third generation of players and second best behind the 2nd gen HD-XA2. Different from the HD-A30, this A35 can handle bitstream audio for TrueHD, something even my PS3 cannot do. Compared to the A20, it loads up a little bit faster, but in terms of navigating through the "setup" screen, it is VERY VERY fast with no lag at all!

As always, the HD DVD players provide true high def video quality but on top of that, it is THE BEST DVD UPCONVERTING player IMO since I own two other dvd upconvert players. As long as the DVD upconversion is not constrained by DRM (I hate that thing...it's all your fault SONY), the upconversion is nearly high definition. If you sit a ways back from your TV, you really will have a hard time distinguishing Toshiba's upcoverted image vs. HD DVD/Bluray unless you compare them side by side with two separate TVs. Then ofcourse, the best thing about HD DVD other than video and audio quality is the In Movie Experience (Picture in picture, web-enabled goodies for download, bookmarking scenes, sharing your favorite clips with your friends, etc.).

If you do not want to jump onto the high def bandwagon, try to settle for the HD-A3 because not only is it one of the best DVD upconversion, it also serves as a HD DVD player, especially with the 2 movies in the box plus 5 through mail in rebate. These prices for the third gen players sure beat OPPO's dvd upconvert ONLY player, while matching, if not exceeding the image quality. There's really nothing to lose for such a great product.

starsLove this machine
I just got this yesterday, and after having watched an episode of a favorite TV show (the HD version) on it, I gotta say I love it. Previously, I had a Toshiba A2 (which I moved to a differnt room) attached to the projector system we use, and while the differences in picture and sound quality are subtle, they're there. After having ordered this machine I discovered--to my surprise--that my projector supported one flavor of 1080p (1080/24) and to make use of that resolution/framerate requires a machine like this. Plus, the passthru sound option is nice. (Let your receiver/amplifier do the work!) Anyway, after a day's use, I think the A35 is really nice. Worth the upgrade.

starsExcellent player fo HD-DVD titles.
This player works as made publicity to No disc he has caused up to now the isues. Absolutely YOU MUST make the modernizations of firmware however. I have used the orifice built-in of Ethernet for this and has worked exactly like described. It is a shame HD-DVD seems to be losing earth, because I by far prefer this player over my player of Blu-Raggio di Panasonic BD-30. For he turns out better, probably wished receiving to you that it can handle highest extremity HDMI 1,3 and the dispositions knows some connected.

starsLOVE HD-DVD
I have one HD-DVD that won't read but other then that this thing is solid. Way faster load times then my HD-A1 and doesn't error out when I switch inputs on my TV.

starsExcellent
They have been satisfied with this player. It takes a small more long to begins in on (more less than 1 minute) that my old players of DVD but the handbook of the owner explain that this is more like a calculating that a DVD player. I can say to one difference with upconverting even if obviously good like HDDVD. I have still bought one marks of Toshiba because of the satisfaction that I have had with my player of Toshiba DVD, I moreover have "phillips" but the Toshiba was by far my favorite (even if was several years older). I can suggest to buy this unit, the only question are the disposition wars. The examination "of the series of the earth of the planet" was NARCOTIC and I could not believe the particular one "in Shrek 3". Moreover they are impressed with the quality "in Bravo de River" and "in the investigators", particularly with old like those films they are. The only disadvantage is when to watch a HDDVD that is not remembered of where the film it has been arrested, it makes on normal DVDs.

starsWOW
This is my 4th HD DVD player. I bought my first one, an HD-A1, in April 2006 when they were first released.
Since then I have upgraded to the A2, the A3, and now the A35. And I have to say, the A35 is by far the best player I have ever had. It is simply amazing to me how far HD DVD has come in just a short time.
I used to have an Onkyo 605 A/V reciever, but after buying this player, I had to upgrade to the 705 so as to be able to matrix TrueHD and DTS-HD Master to all 8 speakers in my 7.1 system, which the 605 doesn't do.
Its ability to bitstream audio directly to my 705 was the biggest selling factor for me.

I resently tried to buy a Blu-ray player as well, but I returned it because the product is truly unfinished. My A35 all the way down to my A1 could all access internet content and do picture in picture, as well as web interactivity right out of the box. No BD player can do that yet. This just made me appreciate my A35 the more.

starsDiggin' the great picture and the 5.1 multichannel analog outputs.....
I had an A3 that was a Christmas gift - saw the prices fall on the A35 and upgraded. Connected via HDMI to a Mits 1080p 65 inch DLP. The picture with HD content is smoother than the A3, especially at 1080p/24hz. 2001, and Bladerunner look and sound fantastic!

Been listening to the audio using the 5.1 Analog outputs to a Panasonic SA-HE200 receiver - my Velodyne sub is getting a real workout, and, I'm getting full bandwidth audio reproduction from the player when engaging Dolby True HD. (Don't forget to balance your speakers for the best results in 5.1 multichannel- there is a setting in the A35 menu screen for that adjustment - use an inexpensive Radio Shack analog sound pressure level meter for best results.)

The connection via an optical cable sounds crisper, but I found analog surround audio has more depth, and a more natural sound when I switched between Dolby Digital Surround, and TrueHD. This replaced a 5 year old Panasonic dvd-s55 that had analog outputs.

The A35 had the most current firmware, so I was up and running in less than ten minutes. Will probably pick up a blu-ray player when the prices are more reasonable - there is content only available on BD that I would like to see sometime. If Toshiba would produce a dual format player, I'd buy it.

Some minor quirks:

1080P/24hz setting makes standard def dvd a little herky-jerky - leave it on "up to 1080P" if you watch more SD dvd material.

HD DVD does not remember where you left off if you exit the movie and come back to it again - you have to create a bookmark. A tedious, time consuming process.

I suspect that HD DVD will be around for a while. I'd probably buy one anyway, even if I had no interest in high def movies. It's an excellent upconverting player at a good price - makes my standard def dvds look almost HD.

Next purchase will more than likely be a new av receiver with hdmi connections and support for next gen audio formats, like the Onkyo 605 or 705. The 705 still has a phono input - I still have a turntable.....

starsThe Perfect Movie Companion
After much search on the blue beam against HD and to go for the platform better than technology (that the considered things are HDDVD all), Toshiba were one choice easy to bind together to the new screen of the cinematografo of 46"Toshiba Regza. Much search through the HD tribunes supports my thoughts initital, so as to the HD-A35 Is been born begins them them present. After a high and a modernization relatively to fast solidification of firmware, the first HDDVD for grace the screen was U571 (the courtesy of NetFlix) and has been jumped absent. The high way of the cinematografo of Def 1080p/24 is simply breathtaking! At the same time, the definition DVDs standard in on- is converted and renders an image equally impressive. - they are definiately in the love with this and the night of film with my moglie has been relit - we are watching more than ever and we are enjoying them every tip (credila or not, really it is granting the arguent on going with the greatest television). Therefore, in a nutshell: For: - fantastic image and sound -1080p/24 for the true rappresentazione of the film - definition of the cinematografo of means of prices the high hour. Sure, the relati ones to you $50, but still enough economic it do not have to attend at all more long in order to jump within. - Netflix has a great collection of HDDVD - just, this is not approximately the player, but if you must like me and you do not have to wait for in order to exit and to invest in an enormous collection of HDDVD, Netflix is the faster sense to nirvana. Against: - second returns approximately 30 feeding over to the possible employment. - the Film studies still are couple in one war to you over the HD dispositions. If they supported as soon as it is HD DVD that the blue beam, high Def DVD would fly outside of the console.

starsAwesome machine!
This machine is simply IMPRESSIVE! I have obtained this as a gift for Been born them (from me to me) in order to accompany mine receiving of Onkyo SR705 and I loves it! I must admit, initially I was skeptical when omnipotent of Evan) with my kidskin watches the first film of HD DVD (because it has begun to behave itself in on partially through and of film... the this was after the modernization of firmware! After the restitution of the film behind (he was brandnew) in order to obtain it to an other new copy has worked the just ndemnity. He turns out that some of the titles them on two sides of HD DVD have had one sure people of fabrication defects... therefore, just return the film and NOT the A35. The earth of the planet (version of HD DVD) hardly sbalorditivo has had the ability to regulate the escape to 1080p/24 on this model. For the newbies, "the 24" means 24 structures to the second (fps) and the greater part of films and the exposures of t.v. (at least not-truth one) are talk nonsense to you in this disposition originally. That means that you would obtain playback from the graceful HD-A35 the a lot the director had meant. Spec. final of deep color (that they will take the color that current we see from million to the billions of the pixel color) finally enters once in the place, the A35 is waits for (and so as to it is the floodlight of Epson and Onkyo 1080p... all the HDMI 1.3a compliant). HDi (interattività of satisfying and fotoricettore) moreover renders to the HD-DVD experience all the profit since Blu-Raggio still is resolving the bugs in this unit. Beyond that the all this, the A35 is probably one of the BETTER players of DVD upconverting on the market... in my opinion poichè I have naturally not examined the others that "it supports" to make this scaling much good. People listen, upconverting will not render you resemble it of the DVD standard HD, never... period, but the A35 makes a job large to render they the sembr better!! That is the many obvious on seeing things to 100 ", not necessarily on a 65" or smaller with than t.v.. Nonlo lasci to forget itself to point out the sound. Digital dolby more 5,1 is a flattened sound much pleasant one encircles the disposition (much more better of the Digital dolby originates them 5,1), but the disposition lossless dolby of TrueHD (via HDMI) is the sound that more incredible is never felt end to me here (like on the V for thanks of Vendetta)... to the high possibility of the audio of tip rate. However, I have still not perceived the audio matrix of DTS HD I still encircle the healthy disposition, but I know that that also is supposes for being impressive. If nothing otherwise, this machine has more much than you would preview to $299 or to less (it was originally) $499... that it is a rub! Finally, I know that the greater part of people have/own a floodlight 1080p, but IF yours t.v. is not able of maneggiamento of the 1080p/24, this machine can produrla and is good worthy the additional cost over (moreover difetta of the future deep support of color) models HD-A3 (not 1080p and difetta of the future deep support of color) and HD-A30. Moreover, if fairies not to encircle newer receiving the rabbet heals with HDMI... the A35 makes to encircle the additional escapes analog for everyone and the others two thirds party models previously point out you of the generation, therefore they make attention in your choice! Like of customary, Amazon.com has come once again through for me!! Ringrazia the types!

starsVERY IMPRESSED
I WOULD WANT TO HIT The MORE IMPORTANT THINGS IN FIRST PLACE # 1. The IMAGE ON THIS PLAYER Is IMPRESSIVE. PEOPLE HAVE THEY OWN PREFERENCE On the DISPOSITION, BUT COMPLETELY THEY ARE SATISFIED WITH THIS PLAYER. I AM MAKING IT TO WORK To a 46"samsung Lcd To 1080P. # 2. TIME OF CARGO. IT OBSERVES, THIS IS JUST PART OF THESE PLAYERS. IN TRUTH, WE ARE SPEAKING About 1-3 TIME MINUTEREN TOTAL From the FEEDING KEY That IS PRESSED To BEING ABLE To the VIGILANCE a FILM. IT IS NOT REALLY QUALCHE.COSA THOSE ARGUMENTS TO THE END. IT PUTS A SURE POPCORN WITHIN WHILE THIS THING PUT INTO AN OVEN IN ON!! # 3. AUDIO. IF BEEN WISHING TO ENTER In the HIGH-DEF ARENA, a GOOD One RECEIVING Of A/V Is IMPORTANT HOW MUCH Qualche.cosa. THIS PLAYER HAS a PIEDINO IN ON On The GREATER PART Of the OTHERS IN HOW MUCH WILL ALLOW That FACADES TO DIRECTLY WORK YOUR RECEIVING AUDIO To YOURS (IF CONNECTED WITH HDMI). I HAVE MINES TO GO To a ONKYO 705 SERIES. I CAN DECODE ALL The DISPOSITION That YOU CAN THINK Next to And SPEED DISTORTION, CLIFFS Of the HD AUDIO!!! IF BEEN GOING TO MAKE TO WORK THE SOUND TO YOUR TV, THIS IT IS ALL REALLY INSIGNIFICANT. HOUR SECONDARY THINGS # 1. The PLAYER SEEMS a CUMBERSOME One LITTLE. NOT THAT THIS MATTER Of MAY To The GREATER PART, BUT, IT Is RIGHT LITTLE a LARGE One In the WIDTH And DEPTH # 2. There is One CHARACTERISTIC MAINLY USELESS Of the RESUME. IF YOU STOP TO PLAY a DISC, BUT YOU DO NOT EXTINGUISH the UNIT, YOU CAN RESUME the PLAYBACK From WHERE YOU WERE. IF YOU EXTINGUISH THE PLAYER HOWEVER, YOU DO NOT OBTAIN NOTHING!! THAT IS STUPID KIND. FOR the MONEIES, THIS PLAYER Is IMPRESSIVE. The AUDIO AND The VIDEO ARE CLOSE To PERFECT. IT BUYS THIS UNIT And IT IS MUCH PLEASED.

starsHI DEF DVD Player
Large player of DVD! He not only renders the sembr of large HD DVD, but all of the sembr of our excellent normal DVD also. The connection and easy we have obtained two free films of pure HD. Advanced product up to now!

starsA steal at today's prices
Connected to the router, firmware update was a snap. Don't rush it though, it'll let you know when it's finished. Also, if you disconnect power to the A35, it'll send you to setup next time you turn it on.

I feed the A35 into an Onkyo 705 over HDMI. It bitsreams TrueHD on down as advertised and can force 1080P/24fps, which looks great on a Sammy 5084. The aerial city scenes in the Bourne Ultimatum are stunning. 300 came in the box and sounds awesome in TrueHD.

Playing CDs, I'll compare it to the PS3. The A35 allows the 705 to offer more sound choices, is simpler to use, and silent. It doesn't play SACDs though and if you have any DVD-A discs, they'll both play the DD or DTS tracks but the PS3 is much quicker. Which brings up the biggest flaw: the A35 seems slow - at everything - compared to the PS3. Initial start-up, loading a disc, changing tracks, etc.

If you have an HT system that can display 24fps & work with bitsream lossless audio and it makes sense to you to own an HD-DVD player given the state of the format, the A35 is the one - especially at what they're going for now.

starsBest HD DVD player for the money
I bought this to go with a 47" 1080p Westinghouse LCD and I was totally impressed with the image quality, for both HD DVD's and standard DVD's upconverted to 1080p. Too bad, everyone's bailing on the HD-DVD format and supporting Blu Ray...well, at least this unit can play regular DVD's and DVD-Audio.

starsToshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player
I am very pleased with the services I had received from Amazon.com. My orders was always received promptly and was always packaged properly and I was amazed of the High Definition and Dolby output from my Toshiba HD DVD Player. I have done business with Amazon.com for a very long time and shall forever be loyal to them.

stars99% perfect
I'm very happy with this player. I have it connected through an HDMI switch into the HDMI input of a 6.1 surround system, which then finally connects to the HDMI input of my 1080p hdtv. Haven't noticed any HDMI link issues whatsoever.

HD-DVD movies look great. DVDs look wonderful too - far better than I expected. Sound (from the 6.1 receiver) is incredible. Try watching the "Dodge This" scene from the Matrix - it sounds like the final bullet from the Agent goes straight through your skull!

So why only 4 stars? 1) The MSRP is very high. I got a good deal (thank you Amazon!), but especially with recent announcements it seems like BluRay may end up being the winning format war. 2) By default it outputs in 1080i; if you have a 1080p tv you have to do a 1-time settings change. Would be nice if it could automatically detect this. (I don't know if this is a limitation in the technology or the player; but as a consumer, I don't care!) 3) As others have said, this takes a while from when you first turn it on until it's ready to receive a disk. When it comes to electronics, I'm all about "instant gratification". All in all though, to wait 30 seconds for a beautiful picture is definitely worth it! 4) maybe I'm doing something wrong but sometimes when I fast-forward a movie I get a very useful on-screen time bar to display where I'm at, but sometimes I don't. I don't like having to figure out the inconsistency - I wish it were either always on when fast-forwarding, or never on. Ignorance is bliss.

starsHD-A35
Player de Nizza, with the fried patatine, cutting image. They have been excited when I have bought this like Christmas present coupled them with one flat screen TV. While the image is much pleasant one, a lot dissappointing in order to discover that the main companies have exceeded skillful of the blue-beam after the festivities. That hour will become, for the greater part, a reasonably expensive player of the dvd "of in on-conversion". Fortune teller who the good news is that one for films available for HD, the price probably will come down.

starsNot bad. But it's no Blu-Ray
Recently I have modernized my domestic theatre. Currently I am directing a 60"sony KDS-60a3000 TV, receiving of SONY STR-DA4300ES 7,1, PS3 (for Blu-Raggio) and Toshiba HD-A35 for HD-DVDs with a center of feeding of reference HTS 3600 of the monster. The loudspeakers are one put to complete point of 7.1 infinities (a total of 24 loudspeakers) with the connected entire system via cables of the monster. In confronting Blu-Raggio to the HD: I must say that the PS3 is therefore the much most solid one. The Toshiba thinks and it is behaved fragile. Starts in on and the times of cargo are many discs of a valve on the Toshiba. Both the units have narcotic image and to play and calm I would suggest the Toshiba for a HD player. Probabaly more like support however. I have bought the Toshiba mainly because of some of the titles them available in the HD disposition. But, with the exposure electronic of recent consumer (CES) in Vegas and the news around to the industry, it is similar life of HDs will not be too much longer durable. Even if I appreciate HDs (and will continue to buy/rent- you can rent to the Successone online but in I did not place to you -- only Blu-Raggi is to disposition in order to rent in theirs placed to you), apples to apples, it really is not good how much Blu-Raggio.

starsToshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player
That is a large part of equipment for the moneies. However, it seems that HD-DVD can be one what of the past. The recent approval more houses than film for falling HD-DVD and adding Blu-Raggio as they disposition of the choice can ortografare the extremity for HD-DVD. Until then, Toshiba is the sense to go.

starsHD DVD
Perfect player, I love HD DVD. To the new low prices this cannot be beat. Hour I have supported HD DVD from the launch for approximately 18 months. That is a great sense to obtain the characteristic new and quality with being able to the existing collections of upscale DVD. They wish HD in tension DVD

starsExcellent Quality and Price - Better than Blu-Ray
I did a lot of research before purchasing an HD DVD player. My decision to go with HD DVD over Blu-Ray was for the following:

-The HD DVD audio codec is more strict than Blu-Ray, so one could assume that HD DVD will produce higher quality TrueHD audio
-Price: The HD DVD player is ½ the price of a comparable Blu-Ray player
-At the time of purchase, Blu-Ray players didn't yet support TrueHD audio
-HD DVD players were outselling Blu-Ray 3 to 1
-Most of the titles that I wanted were on HD DVD and cheaper (avg. $20 ea)
-The DVD consortium backed HD DVD
-The dual/multi layer support for HD DVD means that it can store more data per disk side than Blu-Ray - interesting that Blu-Ray proponents claim the opposite
-The Amazon reviews on the Toshiba players were far better than the Sony/Panasonic Blu-Ray players

Overall, I'm satisfied with this HD DVD player but I suspect that the days of physical media disks for audio/video content are numbered - I fully expect to be downloading most of my 1080p content in a few years (i.e. AppleTV, Netflix, or TiVo downloads). Here are the A35 pros/cons:

Pros:
-Excellent video/audio
-Support for TrueHD direct to your receiver via HDMI
-1080p, deep color, and CEC support
-Great price $260 - expect to pay 100% more for a comparable Blu-Ray player
-Ethernet support; auto updates

Cons:
-Doesn't remember/bookmark disk location when you turn on/off player
-Startup time is slow - about 30 seconds. It takes 45 seconds to eject a disk
-Warners Bros recently announces exclusive support for Blu-Ray - not sure what this means for HD DVD but at 1/2 the price and better consumer reviews, HD DVD is the clear winner for me

starsExcellent upconversion, superior picture quality, superb on-board features!
I have had a A3 for a period of short time (weeks ~3-4) and since a lot has been made an impression from the general quality of the image of films of HD DVD and subsequently I have bought a new plasma that of 24p-capable 1080p I have decided to rise, obtains all the audio support lossless etc of codec. Originally eyeballing the relative XA2 for (presumed) upconversion the advanced one of the shunting line normal standard DVDs - had my job they are a large fan of the Optix silicone countless ' - but after that technology of immense Teranex/HQV of the comprised search the calls to mine I placed you of local (the NYC) concluded that if is any difference in the quality of scaling between the integrated circuit of XA2' s HQV and A35' s ABT then must be much thin or more rather marginal one because I could not really blot qualche.cosa. Moreover the quality of the image of A35' s HD according to like was reported a tad more cutting benchè could see it only a lot in little cases. "the slogan touted of quality of configuration" has often not had never some meant me; I have wished an optical disc player desktop for the domestic scopes of entertainment, not to ruggedized the mobile player del the military-degree - not there is sandstorm nella our living room and is a brownstone well-built therefore for the moment in which a serious earthquake city has struck my player della del pavement alla half has been destroyed, prendentele the United States and the world-wide economy with... short along of history I could not justify the $150-200 additional XA2' s that the illuminated remote control would cost - external resumption of A35' s difetta della light bulb - in way they give after that you sold my A3 to mala pain used for my friend I finally it has made and it has ordered this unit. The transport was express and obtained just it to time to have all on the place for Been born them. In the first place I have modernized firmware - in spite of the net connection I have burnt it to a CD, safe better than spiacente - then couples to you with my new TV and boy, also we were made an impression beyond the level of A3' s when we have begun to watch new runner HD DVD of the lamierina! Excellent quality of the image, excellent, skillful healthy quality from the box it and in spite of has not been never the type "vigilance of all the comprised supplement type of scenes cancelled" with the shunting line normal standard DVDs task that characteristic interactive of HD DVD was really large. Moreover we love the region-free nature of HD DVD, the fact that the films import - from the UE and Asia - all to you play very well here: the studies would not have to be able to control that what, where, like or when I they watch finchè I pay it, simple normal school and. The quality of Upconversion is really large and up to now those well-known problematic discs of Netflix even play to you very well: Memory only a level but problem playback of HD DVD the digital prints them then of cleaning outside of the disc I have repaired it. Us it is not some thing that negative straight-outside can say but I have met little small disturbs and larger: - still task that 30 second affinchè the loading of arrange-in on and an other 10s gioc is long, - they are one aims perplexed from this 1080p24 against the normal problem of DVDs (us would have to be a switch automatic rifle), - I they do not understand why this player cannot play films from the net (is tied, not a connection without threads spotty!) neither outside of the orifice of the USB, as an example VC1/264 in the first place then Xvid/Divx more subsequently (PS3, anyone). And here only main disturbance is mine: the system of return of playback or rather the lack than that. That executive monkey-brained has calculated that will be a good idea to replace the characteristic standard ' of return ' of well.-working DVD, I it does not know but sure it is therefore clueless approximately this market would have immediately be put into an oven... Currently HD DVD does not offer to some kind of return DVD-style classic after the arrest of the playback - if you hit the arrest hardly then that you are swept, period. Your film begins from the beginning the next time and there is nothing that you can make this purpose. Instead in the first place you must make a bookmark then pressing the B key that you can press the arrest so as to you can send back it from the menu on the really contatore-intuitivo riavviamento..., flies of the bookmarks against the conventional characteristic of DVD (than, naturally, still works very well with normal DVD!) and Marches no sense any: in the greater part of the cases a film arrested when someone or qualche.cosa of unexpected interruptions you therefore is probability here that least you will follow this stupid procedure. I would really want to see that a this fixed IE return function that arrests the playback would add a bookmark automatically therefore at least has a probability to send back manually even if to guadare through those marks and intros non-skippable in order to obtain to the list of bookmarks the calm ruin the sensibility, the film experience... 4,5 stars but it is star here that average dò 5 stars because it is more close to 5 in my eyes with room to render it more perfect. Here it is the famous one for that it has obtained confused or scared from the recent news approximately ' imminent defection ' of the Warner from the encampment of HD DVD: how much a high quality that upconverting the DVD player would cost today? Right, around $200-300 or more (imminent king of the IE of the hill Oppo 983HD). How much this unit cost hour with playback added etc of HD DVD? That one is skillful, $269 to leave from the today... and is speaking about the highly improbable action plan of defective case, if Toshiba fell HD DVD tomorrow - with the excessive unit of the 1M it has sold it will not happen anytime soon, I thinks here. Better value outside to leave from the today (Di-Gennaio half of 2008), period here.

starsA very good HDDVD player
This is my forst HD DVD player. I have watched 5 HD DVDs and two standard DVDs. On the most part the performance has been excellent. One HD DVD that I put into the unit straight from the box, brand new, would not play the last ten minutes of the movie. Since all of the other DVDs did well, I must consider the possibility that that HDDVD may have been defective in manufacture.

Complaints are that this unit seems high priced compared to other HD DVD players, in spite of the advanced features it has; it takes a long time to start up from the standby state; and the controls didn't seem to work as smoothily as I was accustomed to from my past DVD players.

The key feature that pushed me toward this higher priced Toshiba was the additional audio modes supported. I haven tried those features yet. I must say that I was very impressed with the way it up converted standard DVDs. They looked great.

As for whether one buys HD DVD or BlueRay, that is a hard debate. This unit cost as much as BlueRay would have cost, so the financial advantage for HD DVD seems to be going away. Today there is more program material on BlueRay, but HD DVD has some other pluses too in backward compatibility and internet software updates.

starsToshiba HD-A35
An excellent HD DVD player. Installation was easy, player worked fine right out of the box. The available update took many minutes to download via a broadband LAN connection, and the first attempt to install the update did not take. Customer service was responsive and after some research, the suggested procedure for correcting ther problem (reinstall) went smoothly and worked fine. The player requires several seconds to initialize and read a DVD, but playback is excellent! This is a great HD DVD player!

starsGreat HD-DVD Player
At the price, this seems to be the best HD-DVD player around. The onl reason I dont give it 5 stars is becuase;

1. The "up-converting" has only up-converted one disk so far. Guess this isnt a problem with this Toshiba, but across the board. We were excited thinking most regular DVD's woul up-convert. Not the case.

2. Slow to respond. When you put the OPEN button, it takes 10-15-20 seconds to open. Sometimes you dont know if its going to respond or not.

Other than these 2 hold-backs, we love the unit. Great picture and sound!

starsAs the price drops maybe it will be worth the price
Purchsed this player with Blu-Raggio pure. The image and the healthy quality are large with this unit but the times of cargo are unbearable. It is necessary approximately 20-3 second to feeding over and to the beginning that a disc plays if there is one in the drive. If I do not have to attend the 20 second ones or so as to it takes to it ignites so as to I can expel the tray in order to arrange the disc within. That cannot seem like a much time but when the films watched a lot as I make obtain a lot annoying must levarsi close in feet to the player for therefore along. The quality of image is excellent with the sound. The upconversion par of the sup the upconverter is confronted to my long base of the dvd therefore if been trying a upconverter that really good I would seem the articles others. In a generalized manner, poichè the price falls this could be worth the investment.

starsVery happy with this player!
I have bought this player to the conclusion of October of 2007 so as to after that several months of use that still I satisfied with it. The posterior part then has paid close to $400 it so as to I wish that I had attended some months. Hour is a defined transaction! The main reasons I have chosen this over the models more in advance payment are the connection options and also the 1080p. I have modernized firmware from a dvd toshiba I have transmitted it without problems so as to using the running version. Still that it attends on the dvds free of the hd in order to arrive but to have enjoyed those that it has. Like many others, task that the transformers is one of the examples of better qualities of the image on dvd... the 300 of the hd is a film a lot to granulate but excellent. I have enjoyed bourne, the table and many others played on it. This player is slow to the beginning confronted to the traditional players of the dvd so that he is probably is only characteristic negative. My feedings of the hdtv of toshiba lcd even over before it. Here why not dò to this player 5 stars. I do not have a player of the blue-beam and I do not have programs in order to obtain so as to I cannot confront to those models. Film not on the dvd of the hd, I buy simply on dvd or I make without. The greater part of sembr of enough good film with the modernization therefore you can enjoy your accumulation current the dvd in the better quality. For a true experience of the hd however... particularly in the dark scenes or to enjoy the special characteristics while the film is playing... the dvd of the hd eccelle. If been observing in order to enjoy your new one hdtv... it cannot go here badly.

starsAwesome !!!!!!!
HD-DVD starts up slow, faster then blu-ray, bet the picture, sound, ease of use make up for the slow start. I can not beleive the picture quality. This is my first Toshiba product but will buy again. Picture quality with regular dvd even better with this player.

starsLove this player.
I have had this in order nearly a month hour and once that you transferred the firmware(which it was before that you watched all the films to have problems zero also with the ultimatum of the Bourne that I have read hardly people that the films have pause of editions with.I in order to admire the scenes that the quality is great. Now if HD-DVD and Blu-Raggio kissed and composed so as to we can pass hardly with our screw and to stop of preoccuparsi in order which it is going to be "the winner" and to preoccuparsi more for that what is the following film of HD we are going to watch. Moreover it would want to specify that the upconvert of a normal DVD is large, therefore close to HD that probably you would not know the difference.

stars Awed and very happy !!!
Before purchasing the A-35 on Amazon I read half of all reviews, both good and bad .The machine is all I could have hoped for ! The regular DVD's are played in awesome detail . I have rented 30% of the HD DVD"S from Hollywood Video and can't get enough . What I don't understand is the negatives I read about the machine regarding,,, waiting , fussiness about playing etc . I must have received an exceptional machine ..... not one problem ! Toshiba has hit a grand slam !

starsGood unit, but...
Technically, I am happy with what the A-35 can do. Playback on some movies was jerky, but after a firmware upgrade, things were much better. Picture on a good HDTV is astounding. The bitsteam audio output is also nice to have if your amplifier can handle it.
Both the unit and the remote do not have a solid "feel" to them, but time will tell if they are fragile.
I would also mention that the A-35 is quite noisy when running. I would definitely not recommend it for quiet playback of your CDs.

starsToshiba A35
That is a narcotic DVD player. It is necessary time a lot a lot to begins in on, but once that it has loaded the system on all is much more puts into effect them. I have convinced hardly a Yamaha RX-V3800 in order to obtain the complete use of the A35 less than my TV it only had 1080i. Coupled it all in on with cables so as to I of HDMI it could cancel the old one mess of audio/video that was behind the equipment and was in heaven.Maybe successive year new TV with 1080p.For hour that the image is really, really large with HD-DVD or def standards so as to I will hold the audio of out.The 5,1 are mind bending, also with the small acoustics de Boston regulated with the submarine of igname the YHT-315.

starsReally enjoying our new Toshiba A35 HD DVD
Outstanding purchase! I was excited that the A35 arrived before Amazon said it would so I was able to use it almost a week before I thought I would. So far so good. We have a 40" 1080p Sony Bravia. I purchased a less expensive HDMI cable and after hooking up the A35 to the Bravia we have only had excellent results with both HD DVD and regular DVD movies. I look forward to when I can get a Surround sound system to really take advantage of the A35. I have only had one challenge; the first time I went to update the firmware it did not finish downloading. I tried it again a day later and had no problems it took 20 minutes like Toshiba said it would.

I highly recommend purchasing the A35. I am pleased with the cost, how quickly I received it and the overall performance. It has made watching movies as a family that much more enjoyable.

starsMy first HD-A35 was a lemon from Amazon
My appraisal is based on the second unit that I have bought from a local warehouse and on the general consent of the players of effettuazione of the sink it buys to you through Amazon. Initially they have been made an impression with it, but while my accumulation of HD-DVD has been developed it would make occasionally to work editions in the audio... the interruptions procedure and Pixilation on 5 on 20 disc. The player was ultra sensitive to all the spec. of powder. The found one that he must regularly clean up the disc in the hope that would play completely, to only make to freeze half it during the sense of the change of layer with the film. I have continued to make the justifications me... that it is new technology, I will repair it in a future modernization of firmware, small 1

starsGood but not great
I have bought this hardly before the season of festivity with a Toshiba 1080p HDTV. The things coupled in on and have taken a look in order to make sure that I had not made an error spending that one a lot on a DVD player. Hour I have had it for approximately a month and I think that I can give one honest review. For: 1) beautiful escape from DVD. I am passing behind through my library of DVD and observe absolutely fantastic on this player. DVD much more better is observing that mine (quality much high) progressive player of exploration DVD through the component video and upconverted in the TV. 2) escape a po' beautifulr from HD DVD. 3) 24 structures that are regulated for film DVD and HD DVD (the TV that I have bought do not have one correspondence regulation 72Hz that functions really well with this regulation on this player, requirement of pulldown 3-2). 4) the connection of Ethernet has made firmware to dawn very easier. Against: 1) it delays to it starts in on and it opens the tray. Cronometrato it, but it thinks before like a eternity that it obtains andante. 2) hitting the arrest and then gioc the returns you all the sense of new to the screen of the sprayed one and the warnings of FBI that you cannot FF through. 3) the player does not remember itself of where he was. My old player of DVD will remember itself of where you were the last one in the five DVD that you have arrested during the playback. Why we are muovendosi behind on the characteristics as this? 4) it is a fan in the posterior part of the player here. In my putting to running point, the members are in one rastrelliera (in a cabinet or an other room) and cannot feel the fan during the scenes calm. 5) the external resumption cannot easy be incorporated in the existing universal external resumptions. The external resumption of HD DVD apparently uses the various codes from the normal players of Toshiba DVD and these are not still available for neanche of the external resumptions that universal already possess. It has occorr 30 minuteren (with that it swears) in order to manually record the external resumption in my universal favorite and the result does not think like "quickly". 6) the modernization of firmware is not optional. My player has begun outside with firmware v1.1 and he could not be taken care of the powder found on HD brandnew DVD. The minimal scratch has meant a bailout complete. Dawning v1.3 it has allowed that player rifinisse DVD with powder and the normal scratches of the light. Therefore he is good, but not large. One star removed for the time and the noise startup. A removed star affinchè the complete inability stops to watch something and to return more subsequently to it.

starsBETTER THIRD TIME AROUND
I HAD BOUGHT TOSHIBA HD-A1 WHEN IN THE FIRST PLACE IT HAS EXITED And IT LOVED IT From the LOADING Of the SYSTEM Of DAY ONE.YES On TIME HAS TAKEN The FOREVER.BUT IMAGE AND The BOUGHT SOUND WAS INCREDIBLE.JUST the HD-A35 AND Is ALL HAD HOPED That The BETTER QUALITY IS the LOADINGS Of the SYSTEM IN ON The MUCH MORE FASTLY THEN HD-A1 ALSO WITH ALL FIRMWARE UPDATES.LOADS The MUCH FASTEST One Than IMAGE Of The FILM WARNING ALSO.I Of HD-DVD STILL To 1080P.SLIGHT YES BUT IT COULD SELECT IT IMPRESSIVE UP.ALSO SEMBR Of THIS PLAYER And RINGRAZIARE the GOD RELATIVE THEREFORE MUCH SMALLER THEN MY FIRST GENERATION PLAYER.REMOTE Is BETTER CALM STINKS BUT AT LEAST The EMITTING EMBLEMA EMITS LIGHT In the DARK.AND LOVE IT OBTAINS YOU WILL LOVE IT.

starsNot much to Dislike - 1080p - HD - it WORKS!!!
The unit is impressive... the quality of the image superb. The ability to insert it your net and to modernize large firmware...!!! Mine only times startup of claim.... But they seem to obtain more fastly with every modernization. It goes ahead and it obtains... that you will not be disappointed.

starsToshiba HD DVD
This DVD player is amazing! We don't have an HD tv so we were worried that we wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference in the picture, but we were totally wrong! Plus we got it for an amazing deal during amazon's pick the best price contest. Awesome dvd player and would recommend it to anyone who wants to get the full effect from their HD movies!

starsGreat Experience

starsDemonstrable improvement
My first entry into high definition dvds was precipitated by an impressive performance of a 32" Sony Bravia LCD HDTV. Its resolution was so improved over a Sharp Aquos (purchased 2+ yrs ago) that my standard definition DVDs looked less impressive. For example, an X-Men Last Stand now showed easily visible digital artifacts that made it less enjoyable.

So I plunged with a new Toshiba A35 player. I have now watched 4 HD DVDs and several standard definition DVDs and can say they are awesome. The Last Stand DVD indeed improved in appearance, definition, and, most importantly, enjoyment. While I would not necessarily get this for the SD DVD improvements, they are in fact beautiful. I do not think I would replace my SD DVDs with HD DVDs -- but I've thought about it.

Operation is pretty standard. The firmware update worked smoothly (via direct ethernet connection into an Airport Express wireless to my DSL). I did need to set dynamic IP settings to ensure no intranet difficulties. I just left it plugged in so when I try out the internet connectivity DVDs I will have easy access. Remote is satisfactory, but not as many options as my Pioneer Elite DVD player. On the other hand, that remote also controls the tv volume, power, channel, and most importantly, the input source on the tv. Are you tired of having four or five different remotes sitting around? This helps a bit.

My connection to the Sony Bravia is via HDMI. Picture is beautiful. The Chronicles of Riddick HD DVD is spectacular. The picture is detailed, crisp, fast responding with no discernible digital artifacts, and otherwise thrilling. Stardust reveals an incredibly horrid Michelle Pfeiffer as the wicked witch, but also dazling special effects. Bourne Identity (one of the box freebies) was also impressive, though with less graphical fanfare than Riddick. Some stress with the other box freebie, 300. At first the graininess was a bit distracting. Several have mentioned this at IMDB, and eventually I accepted it as an artist statement by the director. 300 is so good, that you are drawn into the story and ambience -- closest I felt to being at the movies in a long time.

The HD DVD experience is truly exciting. The choice between Blu-Ray and HD DVD was tough. Ultimately I went with this (which apparently is resonant with the last 2007 upsurge in HD DVD and Player sales). My guess is that the studios aligned with a particular format will just make their content available on both media -- how can you not? If you are skittish about the format war, wait. Or use some of those points you have accumulated... I am looking forward to the release of the Lord of the Rings in HD format. I would like Fifth Element, but that's in the Blu-Ray camp today.

I have read that the VHS-Beta formats was largely settled by the porn industry going VHS. So will that be the case here?

I am completely satisfied with the choice of the A35: it offers a wide variety of enhancements and features. It is a bit slow on start-up, but maybe a firmware update will improve that. Right now the question is which HD DVDs to get next...

PS: I just updated the software (2/17/08). Can't say what impact it has had. I had never had a software hang-up (as some have reported). It did seem snappier in start-up -- but I might have fantasized that.

starsGreat product, bad experience.
I could behind obtain my hands on this player via the ballot of the customer in November, has arrived quickly and I have regulated it endured with my floodlight of hd. the quality of image is exceptional, the putting to point is a brainer not and the orifice of the net renders to things easier anchor. Mine gripe it only is with the service that I have obtained from amazon, to leave hour from I does not have the player more since I have had I have given back it because they have been concluded on the fargli to pay the complete price for even if have received one of the codes wining from the ballot of the customer. I hope the difficulties of amazon those editions for their following promotion.

starsKey Word "Picture Quality"
I have obtained this player because I have wished 1080P 24hz and to bitstream the codec audio of HD to my receiving new of Onkyo 805. I have not verified the functionality 1080P because my TV chip ax only 1080i at the moment. That what I can say is this. The quality of the image has confronted my last player of HD DVD (HD-A2) remarkablly is improved is on shunting line discs standard that of HD. Confronted to the HD-A2 in the way 1080i the image he is more cutting, the contrast is higher, the colors are more vibrant and the black ones have alot more particular. Bitstreaming the audio to receiving is large. The sound is fuller and more dynamic. The player has some defects. Hour is much sensitive one to dirty HD DVD. The player one or the other freeze until that you FF from the dirty section, or it you do not jump. When it jumps the audio usually falls from the synchronization, but a simple blow of the pause key will usually bring back it. Version 1,3 of firmware of of the current the @ and based on my previous experience with Toshiba HD-A2 completely to invite these editions for being resolved in a modernization coming of firmware.

starsexcellent technology
The player of Toshiba HD-A35 HD-DVD is a large part of technology. Toshiba has answered to all the claims that have been expressed approximately theirs first two generations of the players of HD-DVD with this beauty of the third generation. They are therefore happy that has attended the year additional and one half before the jump in the new world of HD-DVD. A selection the much best one of films is not only hour us than HD-DVD, but Marches of these new player who them plays a satisfaction experience a lot. And with (it is audio that video) HDMI complete 1,3 has produced the capibility with easy firmware dawns - abilty, this unit will not become obsolete for many, many years. And in order to exceed it all outside, Toshiba could transport this large product to a reasonable price much and buyable one. Highly reccomended.

starsGreat on discs with no scratches; Can't play rental discs
The A35 looks and the sounds that astonish with new discs right from the box it of DVD. However, it has problems to play nearly all the NetFlix HD-DVDs, than they are not usually brandnew. The player would freeze, he would jump, or just exposure a black screen when he meets the reading errors, that they are frequent. The modernization of firmware to v1.3 has not resolved the problem. In opposition, my PS3 does not have such editions with discs of NetFlix Bluray.

starsThe ULTIMATE Movie Machine!
Thats that what says from the side of the box it and of relative 110% to align! I have bought the HDA35 for my uncle for Been born them with 10 the free offer of HD DVD from Amazon.com and has been paved from the HDA35' performances s. Benchè must incapable modernize firmware (has not read with the instructions however) must say that they are 110% satisfied one with the purchase. Moreover unfortunately they are forgotten to me that the HDMI cable has not been included so as to I have connected the component player who using input and 1080i the regulation (I have taken to the cables members outside of my player of uncles JVC DVD). Lascilo opinion that just the image is narcotic! In effects this unit is therefore good, my transformers watches you of grandmother (BTW of age 70) in it hour is interezza and ' thats it comments a Excellent-free image... ' Hour to you I must explain the loading of the system in on I am necessary approximately 25 second ones and the time of film cargo is approximately 15-20 second, but the relative worthy bond the wait! Today alone with the family I have watched consecutively beyond 4 films (1 DVD 1 DVD-R, 2 HD DVDs) in their interezza on the unit! I can also confirm that job of DVD-Rs perfectly and formidable sound. I have observed the peak hour 3 on DVD standards (benchè it to be converted said in 480p due component connection) the HDA35 amplified in way beautiful and/or proceeded the video quality! Outside it has made easy the player of JVC DVD in the friends of quality of image... and the peak hour of thought of family 3 it was in HD that is until that you did not arrange Disturbia on HD DVD in the unit, the image was incredible, Disturbia has quality of the image of 5 stars on this player, the DTS sound was moreover perfect, after that all this WAS the look and the sound of perfect! This unit is definitively rises from my player of Xbox 360 HD DVD that is already narcotic in relative the own right. If been buying this to you for or to it loved one, knows that you hardly (neither) you will not be disappointed. Some famiy and additional friends have come today over and were watching the ultimatum of the Bourne and have thought that the image was second to NO! Moreover demoed the lime of Blackbrier and the seed and, without HD experience, they have wished to see more! They have watched in the stupefazione while the option of the lima of Blackbriar has shown a GPS seed on the advanced skillful angle of the beautiful image 1080i! I cannot attend in order to see it in 1080p with the HDMI connection! It buys the player, as he exceeds the expectations EASY! Hour I have obtained ottenergli one for, perhaps tomorrow I will play around with some more options on the unit and will order a HDMI cable. Toshiba thanks for the generation of the last Film machine! The OH yeah and they ringrazia Amazon.com for the low price!!!

starsA35 not ready for prime time
I have bought this player of DVD after the search all the comparable players and dispositions. All that will read it has lead it to believe that this player was advanced part of the worthy line and every penny of the relative expensive modification of prices. The boy was twisted of I. After to have connected the player, I have watched the king Kong for ten minuteren and they have been jumped absent. He has seemed incredible. The problem was it has only played for ten minuteren therefore frozen. Repeatedly. After to have made the search more online I have found that there is a modernization firmwear that it can eventually be installed helps with this problem. As soon as to connect the player to a line of Ethernet it was a pain and the modernization of firmware never completely transferred. After 3 hours I have d3connectered hardly the unit and hour it will not make null. It is unbelievable to me that ' a third ' player of the generation would have to make the modernizations of firmware to hold hardly for being installed from the consumer so as to works correctly.

starsHD DVD Player
It was hard trying to pick between Blu-ray and HD. I finally gave up and bought both. As far as HD goes, this is the best there is. I will let Blu-ray and HD fight it out while I enjoy great video quality movies.

starsSuper HD DVD player
This product is narcotic. The Intelligence Quotient and the quality of the screen image unbelievable. The modernization of firmware was little a complicated one in an aspect of the image of iso of the recording of firmware on the CD. But normal rifinito modernization. The player works as it must. 1080p/24 - you could count the hat number on one hand of Spartacus. The only recordings on a TV (Samsung LCD 46") are affilamento turn and make the noise reduction medium. Product highly suggested

starsHD-A35 DOA
I ordered the HD-A35 in October as a Christmas gift. Unfortunately, I didn't open the box and power the player up before I wrapped it. The player was completely dead. The standby light would not come on when the player was pluged in to power. Since I purchased the player more than 30 days ago, Amazon would not do a return. I've learned my lesson.

starsToshiba HD DVD
Easy to set up. Instructions surprisingly clear and understandable.Picture VG but I don't know if system is optomized as I have not upgraded firmware per their instructions. Reviews I read stated boot up time very long but I did not find it a problem at all.Yes a little longer than normal dvd player but very acceptable.

Negative; My desk top pc is in a different room so DVD is preferable way to upgrade firmware. Firmware upgrade is not available on dvd yet even though the supplied documentation stated " call if you want dvd if you are unable to download via net". Toshiba did NOT know when it will be available!
Options are 1]wait for dvd with availability unknown or2] disconnect Toshiba ,move to other room and download via net or 3] buy lap top, buy router and set up wireless network, buy wireless adapter for the toshiba and download--a costly option.
In general very positive about the hardware but after sales support for the dvd disappointing.

starsIt's Worth The Money
I've had this unit now for about 3 weeks, and I've watched about 5 movies with it. So far, the unit performs as expected based on the compilation of reviews here on Amazon.

I have the unit hooked up to my 52" Sharp 92U and picture quality on HD is fantastic. I'm using a Monster Cable HDMI cable (ridiculous how expensive these cables have gotten) that cost me $175. The up scaling feature works very well also so your library of movies will look great on this machine.

The only real negative for me is the load-up time when you first turn on the machine. It really only takes about a minute or so, but it seams for ever! But for a picture like this, it's worth the wait!

Overall it's a solid machine, and a good buy.

starsNo Complaints Here, Works Fantastic!
I have to admit, after reading some of the negative reviews I was a bit worried about ordering this. Because Amazon is easy to deal with on returns I figured the price was too good to pass up! (And 7 bonus HD DVD's make this darn near free!). So without further thought, I ordered and finally put my foot into the "format wars" of the 2000's! (I was a beta guy long ago, I lost that one, hope I don't lose this one but at this price, guess it doesn't matter).

OK, so I get mine, get it out of the box, it takes all of 5 minutes to hook up, I pop in an HD DVD and off I go! It didn't take long to load, it works great, sound is amazing and now I'm hooked! I have a 72" Mitsubishi 1080P DLP screen and this machine uses every pixel! It looks fantastic. Normal DVD's play just fine, the image is great but I can see the difference in HD DVD's. Although the manual said I should perhaps do a firmware update I decided to skip that step (unless I found something that didn't work). I can't see anything in the bonus material or interactive material that doesn't work so I guess I will skip the update part.

After watching several movies, a few trips here, a few to the local store and I can say I'm glad that my wait to take the plunge is over!

So to everyone a little worried about some of the negative reviews... GO FOR IT before they are all gone!

starsExcellent Performer
The HD-A35 is outstanding. It starts up relatively quickly for a high definition DVD unit, it offers 1080p and 24 fps options, and most importantly, it is pretty inexpensive compared to Blue-Ray units or even HD-DVD units sold just over a year ago. On a large screen monitor (I project), even standard DVDs play with a clarity not experienced with high end standard DVD players.

I must admit that I bought this unit with a fair amount of concern considering the format wars. With two kids at home, it was no small decision to not buy the Blue-Ray unit and pass up on the access to the Disney library. The overall library for high definition is small, but growing quickly. With the relatively inexpensive price tag, I feel that even if Blue-Ray wins, my investment is not going to be costly.

I am well pleased.

starsPerforms flawlessly, well worth buying!
I bought this player to go with my new 1080p lcd. I was going to wait out the format war, but the free dvd offer from Amazon, paid for the cost of the unit, and I have an extensive SD DVD collection, so a high quality upconverting player was a must have.
I've had it for a month, and have had no problems whatsoever. I don't find the startup time to be any issue at all. I can't believe some people fuss about this. I turn it on first, then the tv, by the time the tv is ready, it's ready. HiDef DVDs by nature take longer to boot up, there's a lot of data to read.
I have a 7.1, non hdmi sound system, and I bitstreamed the audio to the receiver via an optical cable. I thought the audio system was awesome before, now it's sensational. The dvd player decodes the audio and sends it right to the amplifiers. The difference in sound quality was a very pleasant surprise.
This player read every disc I threw at it including all the new hd-dvds, my sd dvds, and some burners I made on my computer. The upconverting is fantastic, and the quality from the hd-dvds is breathtaking. I haven't seen one glitch, and I've used this unit extensively for a month.
I am completely satisfied with this purchase, and Amazon has refunded over $100 of my cost with their after purchase price guarantee.

starsso far so good
As I am writing this, the machine is downloading it's latest firmware update. I recall some people complained of long download times. Please make sure that the Ethernet settings are appropriate for your home network, as the default connection speed is only 56k. I have mine set to 768k (sounds right) and the downloading process took only 20 minutes, approximately.

*cracks a can of Red Bull*

ahh, where was I...

Oh yes. To connect to your home network router, first connect a suitable ethernet (cat5) cable to the A35 and the router. For me, the router is two rooms away and I didn't want to be bothered with going out and buying a wireless modem for the dvd player before I know it will be worthwhile, so I retrieved my 75 foot long cat5 cable and ran it from the router to the player up above the TV. This was necessary, as I do not have an appropriate video-in on the computers to view the setup screens. I realize not just anyone has a 50+ foot long cat5 cable laying around, so you will need to do the needful so that you can be connected to your router and have access to a television.

Now, power up the A35 and go into Ethernet. The user's guide is very clear on how to do this, and worked for me just fine. Set DCHP to on and DNS to on (DNS is obtained via DCHP). Press confirm and wait a few seconds. If your IP address changes to one that seems correct (such as 192.168.1.102 or similar), then press OK to accept the changes. It is OK if your gateway is 0.0.0.0, at least it was for me.

Power off the machine. Wait a few seconds. Power it back on.

Now choose General->Maintenance->Update and run through the OK screens (license agreement or w/e that is). The player should now see the update server and will display a message that it is updating and to not power it off. Sound advice.

With a decent cable connection, you should be done in half an hour. The player will power itself off when the update is complete.

Turn it back on. Do not worry about setting the time (again). There is a setting in the menu to have the player obtain time/date settings automatically via the network. Since turning that feature on, it has stopped nagging me with the set date screen on boot up.

Unfortunately, I am still waiting on my Samsung LNT4069FX to arrive, so I cannot comment yet on upscaling. However, I just put in my widescreen version of Conan The Barbarian (a never-endingly great classic) and it works and looks just fine.

Boot time is about 30-35 seconds, well within reason. You're only going to notice it if you forget to power on the player until the last moment. Make sure it's the first thing you do before pulling the film, grabbing drinks, getting comfy, etc.

The remote seems well-made and is very functional. There is a dedicated slow-motion button that shifts between 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8th speed frame rates. There is also a dedicated frame-forward button when paused. It has a very robust repeat system, which can repeat All, Title, Chapter, or point A-B.

The inclusion of TV controls (channel, vol, source, mute, power) on the remote is very nice and putting in the code is a cinch with a dedicated TV CODE button.

The user guide is very clear and informative, although I do not see anything regarding the persistent storage (128MB). It seems to be used for storing content downloaded from the internet that pertains to your movies, or for future feature upgrades to the player itself (from the A2 product description).

Allegedly, the resume function only works on standard DVD and only if you keep the disc in the player. It clears the memory if you open the tray. Since all the HD-DVDs I have are going to be used as presents, I'm hesitant to open one for testing. I will take their word for it, though, as I've seen other users complain of resume not working.

I wish the USB port was functional already for playing images or video (divx, h.264), but that's a minor point, as I'm going to be connecting one of our computers to the LCD tv when it arrives via an extended S-VGA patch cable.

Overall, this thing seems to be working fine. I will give an update once the Samsung arrives and I have had a chance to test it out.

Oh, and don't support Sony's proprietary Blu-ray format - they are already controlling too much of the entertainment industry as it is. The PS3 is a trojan horse attempt to establish a blu-ray infrastructure so that everyone who owns one will be coerced into buying Sony blu-ray discs by default. Very, very clever marketing strategy. I like Sony, but I don't approve of the way they are trying to manipulate and control all sides of the industry, from production, to the disc format, to the players themselves. They are going for it all, perhaps, partially as vengeance for their failed BETAMAX format. I like the idea of the hard coating (not the extremely thin layer of plastic), but I just don't think it's a good idea letting Sony rule all aspects of the film/entertainment industry, a monopoly in their own right. HD-DVD, with more layers, has a potential of around 140GB, which is more than enough for anything in the near future. Also, there is the new holographic technology coming out. So stop thinking size is all that matters between formats, because it's not; keeping Sony contained, so that prices are more competitive, is what matters.

starsSuprised by quality of picture
I received my unit (HD-A35) on Dec. 18, 2007 and couldn't wait to use it. My first movie was the new Harry Potter release, it has both the standard DVD and the HD-DVD version. I tried the DVD version first and was very suprised by the great job this player did on up-sampleing the DVD. Then I put on the HD-DVD and was treated to a you-are-there experience. The colors, the black level, tremendous clarity and great audio was such a jump up from ordinary DVD's that I was stunned. Right out of the box the HD-A35 performed without a hitch. It does take a little longer to spool up but the wait is by no means excessive. Because this is such new technology I took time and read the manual and had no problems with any aspect of the set-up. I was on the fence as far as going Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but with the offer of 10 free movies the choice was made a lot easier. Also with firmware updates the viability of the HD-A35 is extended. Bottom line: The HD-A35 represents a huge leap in home theater bliss.

starsUltra-long bootup time is unacceptable
So, you just bought your fancy-schmanzy, brand-spanking-new Toshiba HD-DVD player in 2007. Congrats! You are living on the cutting edge of technology. And yet...

When you turn that HD-DVD player on, it takes a full minute or so to get to the point where you can insert a DVD. To entertain you while you twiddle your thumbs waiting, the player displays a friendly "WELCOME" on the blue led screen.

Confused, you check your unit to make sure it isn't booting off a hidden floppy disc. Nope. No floppy here. Not even a hard drive. This puppy is booting straight off of a RAM chip, and it still takes over a minute.

This is 2007 Toshiba. What's the deal? My suggestion for those of you who bought one of these units is to leave it on at all times in order to avoid the bootup.

starsPainless Upgrade to HD
To ride the HD against the recinzione of Blu-Raggio was obtaining one heads painful; rendered to the immersion; it has bought a player upconverting of SONY DVD, has modernized to my television to 1080p a LCD, migrato my cable DVR to HD and bought one new receiving upconverting that he has supported HDMI... but I could not obtain outside of the recinzione on which hello-def disposition to buy. Various of many gamers a PS3 that they have made to wait for the choice made for they - my worry was not therefore much quality or amount - but video selection. That good it has made the one-way muoventesi or an other average if mine videos were not going to be available on the disposition I have chosen. Therefore, while many are attending towards Lucas outside in order to see if it will push the wars of the star outside with decision of Blu-Raggio only... my on the disposition concentrated around to two words: Travel Of the Star... and for the good measure one new word: Serenity. With the decision on the made disposition, the easier choice has seemed to be which player to buy. Fortified with a list of the reviews and the observations fotoricettore-based advanced of the customer - I have made some controls visual to I placed to you local and they are deposited to me quickly on the series of Toshiba of players; I was fortunate in how much the A3, the A30 and the A35 was vendendi to all placed main - with one variety to you of puttinges to point of the exposure. Therefore with my moglie and children who distracting the store clerks never therefore annoying - I could feed inserita/disinserita, registry, the control and in a generalized manner handles the players until the interfered one to or the someone largest one has eliminated the external resumption. With the still fresh rappresentazioni in my mind, I have still tried the fotoricettore and against my normal one one practices in - decided of the Toshiba A35 to Amazon. I usually do not buy the electronics online - I appreciate to have warehouse to give back my product if it is DOA. However, special Amazon, comprised the free price, S/H and 10 free DVDs was too much good to pass in on (saved beyond $150 outside of the local prices). Once that received the player, as suggested from several the starter shafts - I have controlled the version of firmware (1,1), connected my cable of Ethernet and easy modernized my to firmware (3,1); it has occorr approximately 35 minuteren - without the problems... benchè the supplement 15 minuteren while the unit has exposed flash to red lights and has remained on point 4/4 did not make a pause my heart until that if found the famous one to such purpose that is normal. Why temperature destiny - the modernizations are here for a reason. Possession has made to work the maneuver of disc (the HD and shunting line standard) to placed you of the local, remembers to me to buy my kidskin a sure ice cream for the distractions that they have generated, has known good the unit has handled is the upconversion that it produces the true images of quality of HD... however, regulating it in on on mine just arranges was the real test. The box it (and before the modernization pointed out of firmware) the A35 has exited gives through. Wonderful the how much really best one has observed - while not parallel a comparison to align, I commutato between is HD 300 that the identity of the Bourne that they have come in the box it and in the DVDs champion whom I have had to disposition of those films and that I could say easy to the difference between upconverting and HD. If you seat 3 feet via while installed the unit, also you can see every change of tone, particular spotted and loss of the fire. From mine only receiving pass-through 1080i, they have even gone for how much to couple the A35 directly to my LCD (1080p) and it has been able, particularly in the action blows, has been able to select the different particular between "" and "the p." Seeing the XA2 it never cannot comment the loss of the integrated circuit of Reon HQV, but since upconverting of A35 it has bound together or ecceduto the oldest SONY that I was using - it is not a worthy point to pursue. Moreover I do not see the problem "of wait", pointed out from other critics us like that large of a problem - yes, it is more long not therefore long little of a player a standard of DVD... but that the indurrebbe ones to give back the player. Therefore, after one put to point it begins them easy and making to work the unit with it is HD that the shunting line standard DVD for the image - they are seated to me down and I have listened. While the video quality is... The pre-eminent one moreover like feeling wiz the birds or (of the bullets if that one is your preference) from expenses generates them - and the A35 has still come through. The healthy quality is EXCEPTIONAL. DTS, 5,1 you heal and the characteristics of dialogue increase really carry out and add to the surplus all the quality of the A35. Benchè only recently receiving the player, finds the movement to HD has been rendered rather not painful from Toshiba HD A35 and Amazon.com.

starsDo you want to pay $300+ to be a beta-tester?
Since he was the good-characterized player and more-suggested of HD-DVD between those it lists in a promotion December to you 2007 of Amazon, I have paid $300 these units. I do not have a player of Blu-Raggio, but after that the lotteries of online and in-store the search, have bought this like the player of DVD for one put to point brand-new that it contains a pioneering plasma HD TV of Kuro PDP-5080 HD 50-inch and one receiving STREPTOCOCCO of DA5300ES A/V (both of the SONY of which pits satisfied well with). All are connect via HDMI and have maintained my putting to you to point of the loudspeakers of mid-1990s 5,1 of the fines-thousand (than receiving of the SONY it is guiding a lot pleasantly). The final member main, for which still I am attending the installation, is a DirecTV HD-receiver/DVR, to replace my DirecTV/TiVo puts into effect them DVR. When it is working without difficulty, the image and the sound from this player of DVD -- of right from the box it, with small that tweaking and no that massaggia serious, breaking to mala pain is some of the handbook of the owners -- is Goccia-$$$-VOSTRO-GINOCCHIA ringrazi-you-Thank-you-Jesus fabulous. But this player of DVD does not have at a distance to wait for for main-time. It is INSULTINGLY BADLY and are frank angry to Amazon for the promotion it to me. In order to begin with, this fricking 2007. Task not to pay $300 some electronic member for which I must to king-enter the year, the date and the every time time that is one loss of feeding. (NO SUPPORT OF THE BATTERY. For that one alone, someone to Toshiba would have to be forced to commit the sepuku of career.) Beyond that one, benchè my connection of the player ' to the net and the execution of the modernization of firmware (to 3.1, the version more current available), this machine could not uniform play without scratches BRANDNEW unmarred fed HD-DVDs it directly give the supplier whom it moves without therefore as well as like digital print them, much less one serious scratch. Skipping/non-tracking seems to resort on track 3, approximately 20 - 21 minute in, EVERY SINGLE HD-DVD that I have tried up to now. In approximately once every three hours of playback, bloccherà simply in on. I must d3connecter the thing cursed and reboot from zero. And every such time I must dirgli: Umm, yes, is 14 calm December, hardly like the last time that you have grippato in on, you part ridiculous of crap beloved. Poichè I can spend $50 for an ordinary player highly refined of DVD (with, ringraziar them, support of the battery) from is of of the different suppliers a dozen -- that outside lisceranno and game, without to jump, locativo DVDs that remarkablly is scratched and put out of order -- I cannot help but conclude that this product not measure for being still introduced. If the bought ones, you will not be hardly "an adapter in advance payment," you will be "an adapter in FRUSTRATED advance payment." I think swindled.

starsWorth every penny and then some!
First off, I must say the price for the HD-A35 on Amazon is great. I researched this player and the other Toshiba players on many other sites and in stores. I noticed that many stores didn't carry this model at all. Also they were charging 399.00 for the model below this (HD-A30). When you factor in the free movies Amazon offers with this and the other models, it's a steal!
I personally chose HD DVD over Blu Ray for several reasons.

1. HD DVD players are cheaper and from what I've heard, less prone to having issues. I've read far more reviews about Blu Ray players having problems with reading/playing discs.
2. I also like the fact that HD DVD offers combo discs. It really strikes me that they give you an option. They're not forcing you to buy an HD DVD player now, if you don't have the means.
3. All the free disc offers they have. I know Blu Ray has adopted this idea, but HD DVD did it first.
4. Movies: Blu Ray has more movies available, but a lot of them are bad movies in my opinion. As of now, HD DVD has more movies I am interested in.
As for the player itself, it's meeting my expectations. I've had it less than a week and it looks/plays great. The HD discs I have so far look amazing. The picture is very smooth and the sound is phenomenal.
I was very curious to see just how good the upconversion for regular DVDs would be. It's so good, I've considered not buying a Blu Ray player at all. I was thinking I would get both, but I'm not so sure now. I've watched two standard DVDs (Sin City and The Empire Strikes Back). They both were upconverted astonishingly well.
I know some people have complained about the "boot up" time for discs on this and other players. Maybe I got a newer firmware update or something, but my discs have booted up fast enough. Maybe not as fast as a standard dvd player, but the difference is minimal.

starsMuch improved over previous players
We have had a A2

starsHighly recommended HD DVD player...
This player has them all, Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master audio, 5.1 analog out etc. Works great with older digital receivers that do not have HDMI.

This HD DVD player is packed with features and it full 1080p/24, HDMI 1.3 etc. If you are looking for a Hi End Hi Def player, then this is the one for you. It outperforms any Blu-Ray player out their and costs much cheaper.

It even up-converts all your DVD's to near HD picture quality.

Highly recommended...

starsToshiba HD-A35
The large product, the fantastic image, the video of HDMI, audio fiber-optic, price better than the good buys or turns around to the city.

starsWaiting for even newer firmware but overall awesome!
This thing is better than 360' s the HD-DVD they add over. I have obtained beyond that with of season 1 of travel HD-DVD of the star so that you could obtain the regolator of the external resumption of the phaser;) Task that is slower of the thought of loading the system in on and with discs beginning currents but the quality you obtain is excellent. The only edition was that it cannot be based in top to a DVR or to sure an other source that of heat because when it obtains too much warm it will freeze your disc so as to it leaves it himself or to put something in top it is very well. If it still freezes, make that what someone in the tribune of the message has said here -- maintains the inserita/disinserita key for beyond 10 second ones and over and then it will turn outside from himself. That it eliminates it in some way something and has seemed to obtain beyond the funk that I was experience. I have only had for one brace of the weeks beginning from this writing, but therefore up to now good!

starsWOW!
The approval so as to I finally it has taken the immersion of HD. I have decided to take the HD-A35 since the price was of right and with 10 free films like I could go badly. Sink has come today and a lot has been turned upside down when I have taken my package. The box it of the Amazon resembled to a gorilla 400lb has had it as giocattolo of the game. It has been breaked, crushed and resembled 4 years it has recorded it entirety behind. Fearing defective I have opened the box it of the Amazon and the box it of Toshiba has appeared intact. Sad graceful however, the box it of the Amazon was large approximately 3-4 inches too much and the answer more thier had sgualcire on a sure paper in order to fill up the space. Hour, I have ordered DVD from Amazon and are bubble moved in one scato it graded adapted. One could toos it outside of high-laughing and would be right. But a high article of the dollar appreciate this? Poor of the orina of conjecture not... Pretty if you ask to me. The player very well works hardly one small scratch on the face of the player. If you did not love a player therefore a lot I would transmit behind it for the rimontaggio. Sink of the OH! Well on the player. After that it assures me that was in a piece only I have coupled it until ' to the net via the cable of Ethernet and that I have transferred the modernization from the system centers them towards the satellites of the 1,3 to firmware. That one was perfect and it only has occorr some minuteren. I have a older tube HD TV of Samsung 1080i and have cracked in film 300 that has been included with the HD-A35. SPEED DISTORTION!!! To fall of the jaw is all that can say. Therefore, I have thrown in Blackhawk down (shunting line standard) to the control towards the outside the upconversion. Well, it is the transaction here. I was not informed that you only can upconvert with HDMI and not member. Therefore, it observes as I obtain to buy one new TV. IMPRESSIVE for me!!! Nevertheless, I have played some minuteren with the Toshiba and then rehooked on my shunting line player standard DVD of the SONY in order to confront and the image it is still very better on the Toshiba. Therefore I can only attend in order to see the upconversion full. Inferior Line!!! This player oscillates!! Moneies expenses and with the running offer you cannot well go badly. As soon as a famous one adding. I have seen more than a critic to protest approximately the blue illuminated HD-DVD on the front part of the unit "that distracting". If hit the key more fioco on the external resumption goes via. Simple difficulty, LOL. Therefore, except the transport of lackluster from Amazon Toshiba HD-A35 it is impressive. **** 12/22/07 of the MODERNIZATION of ****. the approval so as to I it has had the player for some days and has had sorrow ZERO!!!! Only a wrong impulse to speak up to now. Approximately 3/4 through the voice pursuit has left was disinserito. I have made a pause, riavvolto behind some structures and the game of blow. Repaired problem. Still not completely that upconverting still but that one the players are my defect not. Still they are made an impression with my SD-DVD to 480p. Excessive enormous difference is one playing them in my player of SONY DVD. I am conserving my pennies to me for one new TV so as to upconvert of the latta one completely. PROBLEMS ZERO, SORROW ZERO!!!! And I have received beyond $45.00 in the reimbursements lacking in protection. Amazon Thanks!

starsExcellent player but update firmware before use
I have had the Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD Player for approximately 4 days and I love it! I am particularly impressed with the picture quality of HDDVDs. I have it connected via component cables to my relatively humble Sharp Aquos 26" LC26D6U LCD TV while I await an HDMI cable from Amazon, and I was surprised how vivid the colours, and impressive the picture details were compared to my XBOX 360 HDDVD player while watching the HDDVD version of Dune.
This is a movie I've watched several times on the XBOX HDDVD, so I'm quite familiar with it, and without even attempting to compare the two players the excellent picture quality jumped out at me on the Toshiba.

Although I've had no previous experience with upconverting players I quite like the results on standard DVDs with this player.
I would rate the HD A35 as excellent but I have to take away one star since I had to apply the 1.3 firmware update practically straight out of the box, in keeping with the experiences of some of the other reviewers.
Shaun of the Dead and Apollo 13
